jake65 (1658), Williston, North Dakota, USA Aug 27, 2008 Bottle: Deep and rich in a brown pour with a small tan head. Roasty and sweet up front in the aroma with a bit of molasses and candied dark fruit. Smokey? Has almost an impy smell... Tastes is roasty, coffee, fruity, and a bit more smoke. Has a great dark roasted feel to it. A solid brew. Thanks to BuckDich. IndianaRed (1553), Boise, Idaho, USA Aug 26, 2008 Dep dark brown black with a faomy beige head that was coaxwd with a swirll or two. Eich aroma o dark roasted maltiness and dark pitted fruits, prunes and raisons. Sweet stoutish. WWS even. Expwcting a stout from the aroma...the flavor is a bit of a let downm To be fair though, a vry nice sweet dark roasted flavor. More IBUs would have balanced it bettter I think.
Very good over all though.
BückDich (4793), McCall, Idaho, USA Aug 26, 2008 Bottle: Pours a ebony mahogany color with a smoky tawny edge towards the tailings. The nose is strong and fruity with those dark resinous things that you wouldn’t expect from the beginning: figs, brown sugar and a chewy bourbony note. The flavor is creamy and resinous with an ample hop note and a roasty chicory and chocolate note. The finish is sweet and balanced, woody tail and a balanced overall impact. Nice and woody but doesn’t have that same bourbon note that most of these barrel aged beers have. Maverick34 (686), New York, USA Aug 26, 2008 Bottled into trappist glass. Pours a very dark brown to black with a small tannish head. Looks to be no real lacing. Aroma is candyish chocolate. Taste is wow - I’m getting a very bitter dark high cacao-ish chocolate taste with malts, some alcohol burn and a lot of wood in the aftertaste. Nice little hops bite too. A lot going on here, it’s like an Andean flute band meets Jimi Hendrix meets a barber shop quartet. dlovell2 (137), Columbia, Maryland, USA Aug 26, 2008 Dark brown almost black. Tan head. Roasted aroma with hints of vanilla. Roasted, molasses taste with sweet caramel and vanilla. For a 12% beer you cant even tell the alcohol is so high. Expensive but worth every penny. Very unique. Haslinger (640), Syracuse, New York, USA Aug 25, 2008 12 ounce bottle pours a dark black, Very limited head. Aroma is a bit boozy with some definite roast chocolate. This beer tastes incredible. Very good balanced taste of booze but more roasted malt. A nice deep malt taste. Definite thick mouth feel that leaves the mouth tingling and your stomach warm. The alcohol is very present but not in a bad way. Would buy again OldMrCrow (1179), Seattle, Washington, USA Aug 24, 2008 Bottle.
Pours a deep dark brown with a modest tan head. Woody, almost spicy nose, sweet teriyaki marinade, alcohol. Sweet beer with licorice and tobacco, lots of the strange wood tannins with almost perfume-like intensity, molasses aftertaste. Very hot, boozy flavors, warm on the mouth. Intriguing, but not balanced and I’m not left particularly impressed. Typical DFH; sooner or later I’ll learn. bleeng (587), Spring near Beersel, Texas, USA Aug 24, 2008 12 oz bottle. Thick brown head. Black. Wonderful nose of chocolate, malts, caramel, woody-nice. Taste is chocolate, sweetness, sugar, a bit perfumy with the alcohol present but not overwheliming considering this is 12%. Body is sticky, chewy, and gets fluffy as it warms. Nice after dinner drink. Well done.
