Commercial Description:
Big Brown Ale aged on palo santo wood from Paraguay. This beer is a 12% abv, highly roasty, and malty brown ale aged on the wood of the Palo Santo tree from Paraguay. Palo Santo means "holy tree" and it's wood has been used in South American wine-making communities. We were lucky enough to get our hands on 20 blocks of the super-dense wood and the wood was added to the ageing tank after fermentation.

pours dark brown almost black wih a thin lace for a head. smells almost of chocolate, toasted malt, and alcohol. has some chareceristics that one could attribute to a barley wine, yet this beer seems to steal suttle flavors from multiple styles. I taste toasted malt, fruit, and alcohol. All in all the beer is rather sweet with a pleasant lingering aftertaste of what to me seems to be raisin and alcohol.

The Dan Journal #227. Tasted 8/11/08. 12oz bottle dated May 28/08. Pitch black with a ten head. Cocoa aromas with notes of leather and caramel. Full bodied with a defined vanilla/oaky, woody character. Sweet and sticky malts. Mild hop presence. Toasty with a solid alcohol note. Good woody note. Solid!

Different from memory, seemed much like a proter or an imperial stout, dark brown, thick with dark creamy head, dark sweetness as in carmel and hints of vanilla and fruit, different, nice, better for the colder seasons. High alcohol but smmooth and not in taste.

Pours dark brown-black with a brown head. Aromas are of malts, chocolate, vanilla, caramel. Thick, but smooth palate. Flavors are caramel, vanilla, chocolate, with a hint of banana. Finishes sweet. Very impressive ale.

Pours to a pitch black, thick in body and a small tan head, the strength of this beer is the smooth, malty taste balanced with a wood taste, not overpowering nor leave any bitter after taste that lingers like other beers while at the same time, hiding the 12% alc. Great beer,

Really dark brown to black pour with pretty caramel head of tiny bubbles. Great lacing. Surprisingly sweet smell, but a solid roasted backbone. Sweet and creamy in the mouth. Huge and bold, not unlike alot of Dogfish offerings. Alot of smoke in the finish, which was interesting and set this beer apart kind of. Huge malt and sugars. Very good.

Bottle. Poured black with a thin tan head. Sweet aroma of caramel and milk chocolate backed with light fruits (cherry?). The flavor had caramel, chocolate, and dark fruits, with a nice vanilla backing. Medium to full body and smooth carbonation. Very nice!
