ruskiimperial (52), Richmond, Virginia, USA Sep 20, 2009 From the bottle. Poured a very dark color, darker than most imperial stouts in fact. There is some moderate carbonation with a half finger of head. There are some distinct hints of brown sugar and candy sugar on the smell. This is also immediately apparent on the taste, though some cinnamon spices come across as well. On the aftertaste the brown sugar certainly dominates. If anything, this is almost a sweet christmas-type strong ale. A rather interesting brown ale on steroids is another way to describe it. Quite delicious and hides the alcohol very well. fata2683 (837), Panama City, Florida, USA Sep 19, 2009 bottle, pours dark brown with a medium frothy tan head. Cinnamon and brown sugar spiced nose. Lots of nice earthy notes, some licorice and a burnt sugar and malty sweetness. Very smooth and rich. I love it. dkoonce (880), People’s Republic of Athens, Ohio, USA Sep 17, 2009 Bottle. Black as old motor oil and just about as viscous. The think, dark head faded quickly. Rich malt aroma, with toffee, molasses and coffee dominating the hops and alcohol. Heavy, with a dark malt flavor. This beer is intense, but fairly sweet. The wood adds complexity, without standing out, as I feared. grawk (11), Glen Rock, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 16, 2009 From the first time I had it at the Dogfish Brewhouse, this became my favorite beer. It does everything right. Cirrhosis (610), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Sep 16, 2009 Black body with zero light penetration ¼” brown cap floating on top that sounds like rice crispies, this stuff looks thick. Sweet perfumey aroma, cinnamon, plumes, liquorish and other such dark sweet aromas can all be found. Salty ?!?!? sweet, malty, good alcohol, coffee bitter finish, some soya sauce, and smoky salt make up this complex, odd not sure what to think of flavor. This is so thick feeling it be filling me up fast and now the high octane alcohol is slapping my brain around. The finish is so intense with bitter coffee, plums and cherry linger in the after taste. This beer is a sipper no big swigs happening here. I’m not sure if I like this I think I should but I don’t think I was in the right mood for this beer today, I’ll try again later. snuffla (95), Chch, New Zealand Sep 14, 2009 US trip Aug/Sept 2009 - on tap at toronado. Dark brown with tan/off white head. Like nothing I’ve had before but each sip was a revelation. Massively complex fruit and oak notes. Sipped this one for a good half an hour savouring it j12601 (1151), Poughkeepsie, New York, USA Sep 11, 2009 Bottle. Pours a viscous jet black with a thin dark tan head, which rises a bit upon agitation. Raisins, toffee, coffee, dried fruit, and sweet molasses. Thick oily mouthfeel. Lots of roast, malt, and bitter cocoa. Licorice and tannins on the finish, and just the slightest warming alcohol. Really well done. planky84 (99), , Greater London, England Sep 10, 2009 Bottle from Utobeer market stall. Pours black with a yellow/beige head. Rich aromas of chocolate, smoke, licorice, vanilla, raspberries. A lot going on in there! Big, bold mouthfeel. Flavours of licorice, bitter chocolate, raisins. Nice warming alcohol kick. Has a throat massaging slightly bitter finish. Very nice!
