3.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Black pour with medium brown head. Poured into a snifter at Kalamazoo beer exchange. Sweet scent paired with chocolate. Super light mouth feel. Sweet on the tounge. Chicory taste, mostly malty. Super crisp dry finish. Leaves chalky film in your mouth reminiscent of the silt at the bottom of a cup of French pressed coffee.

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Served: 12 oz bottle
Look: pours a deep black. A dark brown head evaporates to brown spider webs. That hangs around the rim.
Smell: coffee, with a bitter hops smell
Taste: first sip has a smokey bacon flavor. Definite taste of alcohol from the start (even when chilled). When chilled slight hint of chocolate, coffee, and cherries.
Feel: strong amount of carbonation. Smooth flavor profile for the high amount of alcohol.
First Drank: home Decatur March 2014

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Very dark brown/black, persistent tan head. Very earthy, bready, nutty aroma with shades of dark fruit. Flavor is also very bready (dark bread), brown malt, nutty notes, a little cocoa and a hint of cola, the wood character is unusual with an earthy, oily character and a little tannic dryness. Very interesting big chewy brown ale, well made.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
There is an aroma of wood, roasted aromas, and alcohol. It is black with almost no light getting through and a deep brown head with clinging to the side. Roasted flavors dominate the taste with a pleasant wooden bite on the palate. It definitely is warming on the way down. The alcohol is strong, but not unpleasant.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours an opaque ruby brown with a decent sized mocha head that leaves some spotty lace. Nose involves brown sugar, minty hops, some clean chocolate, some roasted malt, sandalwood, chimney smoke, some subtle underlying cherries. Fairly sweet, quite bitter, big flavor. Big bodied, oily, viscous, fair action, drying wood action and warm finish. Really digging this, lots of cool stuff going on, very well balanced with all the elements competing for attention.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap it is a very dark brown not quite black with a small medium brown head. Taste is smoky coffee with hints of fruit, alcohol is not notably present. Full creamy smooth mouthfeel is very nice. Not what you’d normally expect in an ale it is more akin to a stout and is surely to be sipped and enjoyed.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Boozy, salty, ocean-like nose. Super dark like a stout...but it isn’t. Caramel foam. Peppery hops, bright middle. Funk in the finish. This is good, but I really don’t know what to compare it to. Almost like CBC’s Blunderbuss at some points, but totally not at other points.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Incredible look and feel to this beer. Dark and beautiful. Dark fruit on the nose with some smoke/wood. Taste was a little sweet with some fruit to it. Complicated beer. Great find

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours dark brown with a fat 'no foamy mocha head. Visually carbonated throughout and this one speaks to you. Nice natural lacing as the head slowly bubbles down. Aroma is smoky wood, caramel and vanilla. Taste is surprising. Roasted caramel and cocoa malts, vanilla and smoked wood, cherries and wine. Strong alcohol undertone out the back. Somewhat cloying on the palate. Aftertaste is earthy malts, charred wood and booze. More Belgian than brown ale. A very nice, well-crafted beer but a few points off for over the top booze (something no longer noticed after half a brew).
