| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 15, 2008 Dark color. I wouldn’t call it black but it comes pretty close. Tan head, no lacing. Aroma features some wood, raisin, and roasted malt characters. Flavor is incredibly smooth with some raisin at first that fades into some roasted malt. There is that alcoholic bit mid palate. The finish is nice and long and where you get your oak aging character in the form of some vanilla and a bit of a chalky texture. heykevin (1269), Iowa City, Iowa, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jul 26, 2008 A rich dark color with a tan head. Aroma is that of an alcoholic chocolate milkshake (malted) Plenty of alcohol in the aroma but still interesting enough. Flavor is a bit lifeless, with a heavy alcoholic flavor. I don’t get a lot of wood character, but I’m not sure what I’m looking for. My main impression is that of an unroasty imperial stout. Same sort of thickness, body wise as well as alcoholic perception. MI2CA (1266), Noblesville, Indiana, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 14, 2008 12oz - Brewed Feb. 11, 2008 - Aroma of toasted malts, cedar, subtle red wine, dry tobacco and brown sugar. Pours dark brown with a medium head and great lacing. Flavor is quite tasty and unique. Matches aroma with a little more oak and some molasses. Alcohol is well hidden. Palate is sticky and dry. Different and very drinkable for 12%, I like it. nuplastikk (1261), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 25, 2008 12oz bottle. Deep black color. Sweet, fresh, and spicy aroma. Flavor is sweet and unique. Lots of different flavors going on. Raisins, coffee, cocoa, brown sugar..very interesting pungent brew. Very mellow for 12%, but after a few sips the alcohol warming becomes noticeable. An innovative, impressive beer. Brigadier (1260), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA

At $5.99 a bottle this was a reasonable price. I am usually leery of Dogfish Head’s big beers because they seem to mess something up. However this was actually not bad. Once again Dogfish Head has me confused. Give it a shot if the price is right.
Aroma / Appearance - The dense foamy head suffocates the thick black body below. Black cherry, anise, creamy vanilla, and banana make it a nice blend of flavors. I don’t know what palo santo smells like but whatever it is I like it.
Flavor / Palate - Warm and boozy the heaviness sticks to the throat and tongue. Rick chocolate, banana, and licorice travel as a group between the throat. It reminds me of a tropical interpretation of a stout. Were the price more affordable I might give it a shot again. crazyvin (1255), New York, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 13, 2008 Surprisingly dark brown hue with a tan head that had good retention and lacing. Aroma was a mix of wood notes, smokiness and a nice malty presence. Flavor was mildly sweet a nice smoke note and a nice hop profile. Alcohol was present but was well hidden for 12%. Finish was dry. Nice, durhambeer (1245), Durham, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Feb 21, 2008 Very roasty malts... much like an exaggerated Dogfish Indian Brown. Relatively small head. Charred wood smell and nice chocolate, roast, and wood on the palate. Slight chocolate covered cherries as well. Not as vanilla/caramel as many wood-aged beers, but in a really nice way. Surprisingly tasty. I feel like I like this more than the numerical rating I gave it...
