Commercial Description:
Big Brown Ale aged on palo santo wood from Paraguay. This beer is a 12% abv, highly roasty, and malty brown ale aged on the wood of the Palo Santo tree from Paraguay. Palo Santo means "holy tree" and it's wood has been used in South American wine-making communities. We were lucky enough to get our hands on 20 blocks of the super-dense wood and the wood was added to the ageing tank after fermentation.

2008-10-02. Very very dark brown body with a modest tan head. Lovely aroma, modest woody notes, touches of sour cherries/fruit, a hint of spice emerges from nowhere and does not stay long, light alcohol starts to emerge as it warms. Sweet malt base, muted spice and wood, mild fruit, light bitterness balances it out nicely. Alcohol is barely there. Smooth medium bodied palate is perfect for the beer. Bottle Shared by GregClow

Bootle. Pours dark brown with lighter hues of brown in the light. Sweet malty aroma, some wood, burnt malt, 12% does a disappearing act in this one. A good brew.

Bottle. [Tasting @ Papsoe 20-10-2008] Large creamy beige to almost brown head that mostly diminished. Spare display of lacework. Pitch black color. Aroma of roasted malt, prunes, dates, mild floral, light sweet chocolate notes. Also wood and light vanilla like notes. Over the palate came alcohol, mild roasted malt, liquorish wood and again dried fruit. Quite full bodied with an average carbonation and thick texture. Moderated to heavy sweet with good counter bitterness. Lingering roasted malty and very dried fruity finish.

This bottled brew from Indianapolis, IN poured a small sized head of dark brown colored fine to medium sized mostly lasting bubbles that left behind a good lacing. The aroma contained notes of dark malt, brown malt and a mild chocolatey note. The mouth feel was tingly from start to finish. The flavor was strongly vinous in the aftertaste yet not like alcohol but something smoother. There were also dark malt brown malt mild vinous mild chocolate notes in the flavor and a slight tingly hop note in the aftertaste.

Originally tried this at GABF ’07 and loved it. Finally found a bottle to now rate. Pitch black with a decently firm tan top. The aroma is woodsy and gritty. It drinks with a definitive alcohol burn, full of interesting complex flavors, particularly dark ripe fruits, baking chocolate, molasses, maybe even some grape. Definitely a beer for brooding. Poured an opaque, deep, dark brownish red color with a medium sized, tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of molasses, roasted malts, chocolate, vanilla beans, and raisins. Taste of roasted malts, sweet chocolate, some smoke, toffee light resin, light cinnamon, wood, and alcohol as well. Silky smooth mouthfeel.

Black color with a thin head. Light woody aroma. Lots of chocolate, roasted malt and earthiness. Lots more where that came from in the taste. Chocolate, earth, a little smoke, kind of like peat, but not quite. A little dark fruit (cherry, prune). Dry finish.
