Big Brown Ale aged on palo santo wood from Paraguay. This beer is a 12% abv, highly roasty, and malty brown ale aged on the wood of the Palo Santo tree from Paraguay. Palo Santo means "holy tree" and it's wood has been used in South American wine-making communities. We were lucky enough to get our hands on 20 blocks of the super-dense wood and the wood was added to the ageing tank after fermentation.

A rich dark color with a tan head. Aroma is that of an alcoholic chocolate milkshake (malted) Plenty of alcohol in the aroma but still interesting enough. Flavor is a bit lifeless, with a heavy alcoholic flavor. I don’t get a lot of wood character, but I’m not sure what I’m looking for. My main impression is that of an unroasty imperial stout. Same sort of thickness, body wise as well as alcoholic perception.

12 oz bottle from Giant Eagle in Pittsburgh. This is one of the best browns you’ll find anywhere. Something in here makes it exceptionally great. Maybe it’s the wood, maybe the high alcohol content. No matter what, don’t miss out before it’s gone.

The board says its 14% and 35 IBUs. Pours deep brown with a nice frothy brown head. Aroma of wood mulch, nutshells, and caramel. Soft carbonation in the mouthfeel. Initial brown ale flavor of brown sugar and caramel, some hints of cocoa, but then it quickly gets overpowered by the alcohol. Warming and dry woody flavor on the finish. Boy, this beer had a lot of alcoholic kick to it. I am not sure a brown ale is meant to have this type of ABV, as it really overpowers the beer. The wood aging definitely helped pull this together.

Sample at SBWF 2014. Black beer with a decent beige/brownish head. Roasted caramel aroma, vanilla, oak, woody, raisins, hoppy notes, cocoa, toffee, some discreet spices. Roasted fruity flavor, figs, raisins, caramel, licorice, chocolate, warming alcohol, banana notes, cocoa, some plums. Very nice!

355mL bottle Bottled 04/24/14 Wow! Can’t get over how thick this stuff pours, like a pale sump oil-looking liquid making its journey into the glass. Aroma is rich, fortified wine-like, with plenty of raisins, dried fig, dark chocolate, burnt nuts, thick dark toffee, seared red meat character, charred oak, and an almost rancio-like aged character you tend to get with older beers. The stuff is properly thick, not just syrupy, not just oily, but chewable, with a low carbonation accentuating this. Big flavours on the palate with bucket loads of browned caramel, charred nutty wood, dried fruits, earthy leafy hop, cocoa - so much going on! Solid bitter note on finish, booze is warming, not shy but welcoming. Completely different from anything I’ve yet encountered - an old ale, meets an imperial stout, wood aged but not specifically oak, so it’s a whole new ball game. Fantastic stuff!

Definitely blurs the line between strong ale and stout. Coffee and Roma wine on the nose. Booze apparent on the palate running into a nice wine and plum with bitter dark chocolate. Delicious and definitely too easy to drink.

Pours black with a brown head. Chocolate, malt, caramel, toffee, wood, molasses and dark fruit aroma. Chocolate, wood, soy sauce, tobacco, dark fruit, malt, caramel and licorice flavors. Full body and average carbonation. Semi-dry chocolate, wood and dark fruit finish.
