Big Brown Ale aged on palo santo wood from Paraguay. This beer is a 12% abv, highly roasty, and malty brown ale aged on the wood of the Palo Santo tree from Paraguay. Palo Santo means "holy tree" and it's wood has been used in South American wine-making communities. We were lucky enough to get our hands on 20 blocks of the super-dense wood and the wood was added to the ageing tank after fermentation.

Passed on this more times then I can remember, then received one as an extra in a box. I am ashamed to say I passed on such a great beer. Pours black with hardly any head. Aromas are minimal with some light wood, a metallic undertone and molasses. Tastes are big while also being subtle. Very deft wood is present throughout the entire sip, with vanilla and caramel, just a hint of booze as the aftertaste comes on which is chocolate and cola. Mouthfeel is perfect for a big beer like this, silky-smooth and perfectly heavy on the tongue. Overall a really good sipping beer closer to a BA Stout than any brown, imperial or otherwise, that I have ever tried.

Bottle. Trembling Madness, York. Very dark, chocolate brown. Thin, sticky, lasting, light brown head. Aroma of treacle. Cake fruits. Rum truffle. Spot of woody booze. Background notes of caramelised peach. Taste is vine fruit sweet. Woody, burnt bitter. Rich mouthfeel, albeit a bit fizzy. Finishes a bit dry and boozy. Ok. Silly price tag, mind you.

Bottle. Wood, chocolate malt, and astringent ash aroma. Dark black with large tan head. Sweet coffee/chocolate malt and moderately strong bitter/astringent lemon peel/pine flavor. Good body with nice balance. The 12% is very well hidden.

UPDATED: NOV 15, 2015 Restrained aroma in an oily black pour. Huge body is both complex and subtle. One of the best ways of finishing an afternoon’s beer tasting for sure.

Pours dark chocolate brown with thin coffee coloured head. Aroma is woody (unsurprisingly), with lots of spiced vanilla. Mouthfeel very smooth, hits with strong flavours of burnt toffee, vanilla, and winter spices (cinnamon and star anise). Light carbonation and strong alcohol warming through the chest. Absolutely sensational beer

A very good unique beer. Pours a deep black with a brown head. Smells of smokiness and vanilla. Taste is very complex, with lots of oak and vanilla, caramel. Great beer. Had on tap at the Lighthouse Beer and Wine Festival in Wilminton, NC.
