There was a small brown head on it while pouring, but it dropped off almost immediately. Very nice aroma. There is an overall richness, with some aromas poking out. I get whiffs of vanilla, chocolate, anise, some alcohol, chocolate, as well as a mix of fruits that is difficult to distinguish individual notes. The taste is a definite "Oh Wow!". The flavor is very rich, with some roastiness on top. A faint sweetness, and a huge collaboration of flavors. Dark fruits, vanilla, chocolate, a woodiness amongst many others. Very Nice!
I had this on tap recently @ Rehoboth. This is an excellent beer any way you get it. canary dog (445), Rutland, Vermont, USA

Immediate presence of cherry that results in a cough syrup-like presentation.....but very yummy and rich. Sweetness is well-balanced with complex tones of vanilla and roasted grains. Finish is ridiculously smooth for a 12 percenter. Yes, I think the base is definitely the Indian Brown Ale. An excellent experience; and at roughly $9 per 24 oz., a better deal than any wine around. Pours a dark black color with quickly dissapating tan head. Aroma very caramely, roasted malts, molases, raisins, and some rummy alcohol. Flavor has lots of warming alcohol presence, but its balanced by the sweet plum raisin flavors and roasty finish. Overall, excellent beer. JFGrind (1361), Glenside, Pennsylvania, USA

I expected totally different beer than the one I got. Deep black coloured, medium sized brown head, alcohol and licorice in the nose. Roasted malt, chocolate and dried fruits taste with notes of wood, cocoa and vanilla. Also some alcohol traces in the finish. Very smooth for 12% For me this one is better than 90 minute imperial IPA. kujo9 (1079), North Ridgeville, Ohio, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Feb 14, 2009 Happy Valentine’s Day to me, with some left over for steak & BJ day tomorrow! Not sure how this is considered brown, because light sure has a tough time getting through it. And the deep mocha/tan head doesn’t stick around long. Thin, but leaves a nice bubble ring around the top of the beer. Vanilla, wood, and dense caramel aromas are very up front and nicely complex. Light chocolate with alcohol spice that seems a slight bit gingerish. Very light hints of roast. The malt character is also lightly toasty and has a touch of freshly crushed malt. A touch of solventy alcohol as it warms, but adds a bit of complexity along with some red wine fruitiness. The palate is much the same as the aroma with deep caramel complexity and vanilla woody flavors most dominant. Sweet up front, but semi sweet finish with a dry aftertaste that is from the alcohol. Winey fruitiness, chocolate undertones and a light alcohol. Some roasty notes add lighty to the complexity. Mouthfeel starts out velvety, then dries out from the alcohol. Low level of CO2 and medium full body. I like it now, but I think this will be incredible as it ages. I’ll see how long I can keep myself from drinking the rest of them. Very tasty stuff! | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 6, 2008 Thin dark brown head of fine bubbles. Kind of soapy around the edges. Rich malty aroma with some raisins, black cherry, roasted malts, caramel and some smokey wood. Color is a very dark brown with a tinge of red around the edges. Rich and roasty and bursting with flavor. Lots of roasted grains, more dark fruit and some earthy/herbal flavors. Strong alcohol presence that makes the gums tingle. Smooth and creamy palate with a bit of peaty stickyness. Finishes rich and roasty and delicious. This is a fantastic full bodied and full flavored brew that can stand with the best of them. One of the best from DFH in a long time. TipsyMcStager (946), Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Pours opaque brown with off-tan head. flavour is big and bold - sweet fruit, chocolate, raisins and woodiness. Smooth for such a high alcohol content. A great beer.
