3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: DEC 24, 2013 Bottle into footed pilsner glass, golden color, bubbly with fluffy white head. Aroma of malt sweetness and tea. Taste adds a note of pear and herbal hops. Light body, heavy carbonation, effervescent, clean with some grassy bitterness on the finish. Very good take on the classic pils, enjoyed.

Evaluated on its own as a pilsner it is not bad, but the pear flavor didnít really come through very well at all at either cool or warm temperature so as a fruit beer it did not do as well in my opinion. Decent pilsner overall but nothing I would actively seek out.

I am not sure what pear has to do w/ anything but this is a pretty good pils. It is a cloudy orange color w/ a small ring of medium bubbles for a head. Like most American takes on the style, the aroma hops are just a touch heavy handed--and really just a touch in this case--but it is a good, solid noble herbal noble hop character. The taste is mild and itís just slightly tart in a way that kind of reminds me of some wheat bears--perhaps that is the pear. There is good prickle of fine carbonation to keep it interesting and it finishes nicely w/ some residual bitterness and just a touch of astringency. Definitely one of Dogfish Headís more subtle experiments and it works pretty well in the end.

Like many of the beers brewed by Dogfish Head, this struck me as such an odd idea, but upon trying it I really liked it. The pear is subtle, and it really blends well with the beer. This beer had the light body and crisp hoppy bitterness of a real Czech Pilsner. The hops didnít taste quite right for the style, but I always feel that way of American attempts at Czech Pilsners. The rich aroma of the malt, and a certain grassiness, struck me as authentic. But the pear was something completely different. It really worked and Iíd drink it again.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle. Moderate notes all around, with straw for the malt, herbs for the hops, soap for the yeast, and paper and a hint of vinegar in the background. Head is average to large, frothy, white with good lacing and is fully lasting. Color is slightly hazy, yet sparkling light yellow/amber. Flavor starts lightly to moderately acidic, then finishes lightly bitter. Palate is on the fuller side of medium, watery with a lively carbonation. A drinkable Fruit Beer, and probably goes well with heavy meals.

Poured hazy straw color with a 2-finger white head. Grassy aroma with a light note of pear. Medium body, but thicker than was expected. Flavor is woody with some sweetness from the pear at the back. Light note of hops in the finish. As it warms, takes on more of a tea note.
