Positive Contact is a cider-beer-hybrid veeeeeery loosely based on a Belgian-style Wit beer brewed with a bunch of unconventional ingredients for the style. Typically, Wits are brewed using bitter orange peel and coriander, but we went a different route. Inspired by one of Sams trips to Eataly in New York City, Sam and Ben brewed this beer with organic Fuji apple cider, fresh organic cilantro, and dried cayenne pepper. The cider was pressed in house from 200 lbs of apples with our very own fruit press. These wonderful fresh ingredients were delivered to usa couple of days before the brew by Sams friend Zeke of Washingtons Green Grocer. The grain bill for this brew was about 50/50 wheat and barley but a small portion of Anson Mills Slow-Roasted Farro was also added. To make this awesome product, the folks at Anson Millsuse a unique ancient heirloom variety of grain which imparts a delicate aromatic quality (Farrois traditionally used in soups and similar dishes). On top of that, a new hop variety was used, named Calypso, which lends notes of pear and apple that perfectly compliment the other ingredients in the brew. It was then fermented with a Belgian Wit yeast strain, adding both fruity and spicy complexity. This beer was made with a number if ingredients more traditionally used in the culinary world and we designed it to be a dazzling nimble food-pairing brew. Positive Contact: Between beer and cider. Between food and drink. Between us and you.

750 ml. Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy golden with a pillowy head and a medium amount of lacing. Clever nose. Lots of apple as expected with a bunch of supporting players. Pear, honey, yeast, passion fruit, pepper, banana, green tea, fresh cilantro and mild nuttiness. Tastes much like it smells with a bunch of Fuji apple forward followed by fresh baked bread, banana, lemon peel, pear, honey, cider vinegar, a good amount of yeast, nutty toasted farro, rosemary, cilantro and the slightest hint of maple and cayenne pepper. Lighter bodied with really nice effervescent, champagne like carbonation. Medium length finish with a nice mix of spice and sweetness that ultimately gives way to a snappy apple note. Oddly enough I really dug this in a novelty way. Somehow the sum is greater than itís wit and cider parts.

It has a fruity aroma. Pours a goldish orange color with an off white head. It has a cider flavor with just a trace of cilantro. To be honest, Iím disappointed in this beer, I was expecting an overall better beer.

750 ml bottle. Clear gold color with lasting head retention. Nose is apple and honey. Flavor is simple and clean. Belgian yeast, apples and pears. Light cilantro hints in the backend of the sip. The finish is lingering fruit without being overly sweet. Carbonation has a nice effervescent feel. Nice tingle dances over the tongue. It drinks like a 4% cider, so thatís pretty cool. Simple and easy to drink.

On tap at WOB Arlington. Amber in color with a good sized off-white head. Aroma is of cilantro, light chili pepper, woody spices/roots, earth, and apple. Taste is of spices, cilantro, apple peel, pear, earthy (wood and shrubs), and caramel.

Pours a clear, light orange color with small white head. Aroma is fruity, light, apple like, floral. Mostly applely, cider flavor, medley of spices, kind of muddled overall.

Interesting concept here. Pours a murky orange-amber into the glass with a soapy white head that diminishes fully, leaving no lace. Green apples and pears, with light esters to the nose. Flavors are apples, unripened pears, very cider-esque, with light spices to finish, alongside some yeasty esters. The mouthfeel is a bit active with carbonation and a light spice, and superbly integrated alcohol. Goes down like a cider, juicy, but very wit/fruit beer active, estery yeasts. A medium-body that drinks more like a brew than a cider, this is an interesting experiment from Dogfish, and although maybe not my constant sidekick of choice, itís certainly a unique offering that Iím happy to put in my repertoire.

Interesting concept... I am usually a big cider fan, but like many of the DFH beers, this one was just a bit too "unique" for me...

Buona buona!

Bottle. Pours clear orange with white head. Smells like a Belgian, very fruity. Has a light body, fruity- banana, orange, tropical, pretty much like a light Belgian with a touch more fruit complexity to it. Good, nothing great.
