3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 MartinT (6350) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - JUL 7, 2002
UPDATED: FEB 19, 2010 Leafy hops balanced out by delicate caramel malts…Fig-like sweet fruitiness in a round but accessible mouthfeel...Like most Dogfish Head brews, this is very well executed and the description on the label portends a much more eclectic brew than what the end product actually tastes like...
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 hopscotch (7535) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - JUL 4, 2002
UPDATED: JUN 2, 2003 This beer still rocks. The nose is of alcohol, vanilla and maple syrup. The deep, dark mahogany color is beautiful. Such a great beer.

Very deep ruby color with a nice tan head and decent lace. The nose was very sweet and had strong hints of the alcohol content in it. This is a malt based beer with tons of fruity, dark malt flavors. The alcohol brings out an almost plum brandy sensation. A very strong, complex beer that is worth trying and I find that I crave one every once in a while.

A very nice fairly balanced brew with hints of vinous quality. Think I’ll make one. but a little stronger!

RE-RATE 6/18/02: This is definitely a sweet brew with tons of dark fruit qualities, specifically raisin and plum flavors. The aroma is still amazing. Nice bitter finish, but not as balanced as I thought. ORIGINAL: Deep mahogany color with no head but a wonderful nose. One of the most beautiful beers I’ve ever laid eyes on. This is intensely complex with sweet (chocolate) maltiness and burnt flavors balanced with good hoppiness. Very intricate and a must try.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 aracauna (2691) - Georgia, USA - JUN 14, 2002
I drank this in contrast to the Chimay Red I tried tonight. Less of the Y-grass/raw carrot taste than the chimay, but more of the raisony flavor a lot of belgians have. Perhaps because I also drank the World Wide Stout on the same tasting, I also noticed a lot more caramelly/toffeeish flavors than in a typical belgian. I like the dark malt flavors in this beer. Makes for a nice twist on a Belgian. Palate still heavily carbonated, but less fuzzy than chimay. This beer is also more ruby and less brown than the Chimay.

Sweet malt drives this brew. A great tasting beer. could use a little more hop to balance it out though.
3.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 Rib Eye (144) - USA - JUN 12, 2002
’’Curiouser and curiouser’, thought Alice.’
A strange concoction with its own mysterious charms. Almost no aroma to speak of, so it’s hard to rate as pleasant or unpleasant. Short head gone in seconds, and very little carbonation. The flavor is illusive and one sip tastes different from the one before or the one after. If it’s fruity one second it’s hoppy the next, which is, I suppose, a testament to its balance. Whichever flavor emerges on the palate there is always a malty sweet stickiness on the lips. Good stuff overall and deifinitely another unique brew for Dogfish head.

One of my all timers. Rerate 5/31/2002: Very green aroma, like granny smith apples. Thin white head that reduces to a thin white ring around the glass. Beer’s body is a burgundy-ish color. A cornucopia of dried fruit flavors with a slightly bitter tinge. Complex beer from a brewer who is synonymous with ’complex’. Too easy to drink.
