Pours amber brown with tan head. Mild fruity aroma. Wild yeast and fruit up front, with subtle caramel. Pleasant finish of toasted malt and alcohol. Full-bodied, smooth mouthfeel. Very clean and flavorful, but not at all overpowering. Great beer.

Vtg backlog, bottle, always preferred the old extra to this one. Brown pour with a medium khaki sized head. Smell is vegetable, dark fruit, spice, and belgian yeast. Taste is plum, fig, candy sugar, and light hops. Ok, but prefer St Bernardus and Rochefort.

Can’t believe I have never rated this. Draft to taster at cappy’s pour dark copper with thin ecru head. Nose sweet malt, raisin, caramel, apple. Taste similar to nose, sweet early, then raisin, sweet, and fruit. Later light dank.

Aroma is nice but too low for a Belgian strong ale. Foam is too short lasting. Flavor is malty but not complex. Medium finish, should be dry.

Vom Fass. Mahagoni Farben. Süßliches Aroma mit rotwein, Rosinen und Weinbrandnoten. Dickflüssiges Mundgefühl. Sehr komplex. Dörrobst, getrocknete Pflaumen, Rosinen. Alkohol nicht so gut eingebunden.

At first I didn’t care for this beer too much, but had hardly tried many Belgian Ales, which grew on me over the next few months...as well as this beer. The next couple times I tried it, I was able to appreciate it as it is, which is a very good ale. The flavors are both sweet and bitter at the same time, hard to describe. Definitely raisins, sugars, other spices, hops. A darker copper/amber color, medium carbonation. Has a good kick too. One of many great DFH beers.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Old rating. Bottle from Old Town. Brown pour with a beige head. Yeast, currants and roasted malts on the nose. As it warms up more fruit comes out: muscat, prune, fig as well as some allspice. Slightly sweet and bitter on the palate. A bit boozy as well. Long bitter finish.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a nice mahogany color, but had no lacing at all or head retention. Smells like a Belgian beer with raisin and butterscotch. A solid beer here, but nothing to write home over.
