Aroma pulled me in right away, heavy malt, figs, brown sugar, raisins and spice. I wish the flavor could have lived up to the aroma. Although there was noticable raisins and spice, there was almost too much alcohol present. A very good DFH offering worth sharing with friends, but I probably wont buy again. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 27, 2008 12oz bottled on march 15, 2007. Pours a very murky, dirty looking red-brown with particulate floating around in the body. The head is about an inch thick, very fizzy, beige and dissipates slowly and remains nicely laced and swirly on the surface. The aroma is an abundance of malts. Very sugary and boozy. Lots of raisin and dried fruit smell to it. Has a wine characteristic and maybe a little brandy quality too. Surprisingly sweet smelling. The flavor is extremely sweet. It tastes and feels like a nectar. Loaded with raisin and prunes upfront as well in the finish. Lots of sweet maltiness and very warming on the way down. The alcohol is hidden exceptionally well for such a huge beer. Not very bitter. The palate is full bodied and has a distinct cloying sweetness. Overall, this is a very interesting beer. Its intense as hell and definitely qualifies as a sipper. I do like the warming quality it gives my body, but it might be a little too sweet for my palate. I think ill stick to the etre. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Dec 26, 2008 Bottle that I picked up from a beer store in NYC in Nov 08. Pours murky dark reddy brown if there was a head then it soon buggered off. Wonderfully sticky and sweet, big fat plumptious Ma Larkin sized raisins sit on my tongue. I am sat at home drinking this in front of a roaring open fire, its bloody marvellous. Needs to be treated with respect, I sat for over an hour cradling my one. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 25, 2008 [bottle - 12 oz - 2005 vintage] Sampled an aged and a new 2008 one, but I am rating the 2005. Murky ruby color with a very thin tan head. Not much apparent carbonation. Aroma is tons of sweet malts and raisins mixed with some alcohol. Flavor is incredibly earthy, smooth, sweet, and warm. Lots of sweet and caramel malts blend well with a light touch of raisins and finishes clean and smooth with a little sweetness that stays. Absolutely wonderful with age. The only difference between the 2005 and the 2008 was that the 2005 was much more mellow. I recommend aging. 502Flavors (617), Louisville, Kentucky, USA

Aroma and flavor are way too sugary and boozy. Not unique as much as just a mess. Nice to try this first batch bottle. Soonah (915), Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 16, 2008 From MrChopin via trade. The pour was a slightly cloudy dark copper color with a short white head that produced no lacing. The aroma was raisin, wood, tobacco and alcohol. The flavor was raisin, apple, smoke and wood with alcohol coming through. Nice mouthfeel and a surprisingly well restrained alcohol considering the ABV. A nice beer but not a world beater. branspra (214), Arlington, Virginia, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 14, 2008 Bottle. Pours a hazy, amber color with a small, white head. Aromas of raisins, caramel, port, wine, and oak. Slick, oily texture with minimal carbonation although still somewhat complex. Flavor of raisins, wine, and port that while complex also show the alcohol. A good beer but I have had better from Dogfish. Defreni (999), Frederiksberg, Denmark
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 29, 2008 Flaske: Mørkebrun øl, med en overraskende god karbonering. Alkohol og rosiner og tørret frugt i duften. Kraftigt alkohol burn i svælget, men klart drikbar i betragtning af den høje procent. Sjov øl.
