super...alcoholic on the nose
tons of rasin flavors and what not...needs a good 10 years to lay down! soyorganic (217), Denver, Colorado, USA Oct 4, 2008 Bottle: wow, I could smell this while standing up from the table after I poured it. Pours a red/orange color. Aroma: definitely raisins, with caramel and grape notes. Thick taste with flavor very similar to what I described in the aroma with a slightly grape juicey aftertaste that is overpowered by the alcohol taste. I love the sweetness and flavor to this beer, but it would be so nice if the alcohol was not so noticeable. A little more and you will need a chaser. larsniclas (3383), Gothenburg, Sweden Oct 4, 2008 Sampled at EBF08.
Deep copper. Small tan head.
Sweet, almost sugary, maltiness.
Medium bitterness and a bit too sweet and alcoholic. dogfish120love (250), west hartford, Connecticut, USA Oct 3, 2008 Pours a weird brownish iced tea color with a thin head. smells heavily of raisins, fig, prune and alcohol. smells extremely sweet. Tastes very sweet, flavors include raisin, plum, and fig just like the aroma, finishes with an alcohol kick and an almost gritty texture. TheSponge (272), Lynnwood, Washington, USA Oct 3, 2008 12 oz. bottle purchased at Central Market in Mill Creek. Pours a cloudy/murky brown color. Aroma: Raisins (duh) and figs. Flavor: Raisins, dried fruit, with a hint of brown sugar. rederic (1787), montréal, Quebec, Canada Oct 2, 2008 2006 12oz bottle, slight hazy mahogany hue, with a beige head, but falls quickly, leaving laces, sweet toasted, caramelized malt nose with a cookie dough note, nice fruity dried raisins, toffeeish, sugar pie accent, with a hint of brown chocolate, in a warmth plummy aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a sweet toasty, caramelized malt, dried fruity raisiny, plummy character, with a toffee, candi sugar, green molasses accent, within a warmth oaky port mounthfeel, leading towards a malty, raisiny warming finish. KnN (712), Greenbelt, Maryland, USA Sep 30, 2008 Pours a murky rich brown with a minimal off-white head. Aroma is ALCOHOL, yeast, malt and raisins.
Flavor is more ALCOHOL, but there are some tiny background voices of raisins for sure, raw cane sugar, molasses? Honey, licorice. Wooo though, you really have to look to find it behind the alcohol and sweet. I need to pick up another bottle of this and let it age for a year or two to see if it will mellow out. Lots of potential, but a touch on the rough/young side right now. shigadeyo (2210), Harrison, Ohio, USA Sep 27, 2008 2006 Vintage... "Brewed with boatloads of big ol’ raisins."
9/27/2008: Dogfish Head Raison D’Extra has a deep golden/orangy color with a honey-colored hue to it. There is still enough carbonation to product a loosely foamy beige head. The aroma reveals a very high alcohol content and is mildy sweet. It also contains a lot of fruit and cherry with soft vanilla tones, brown/raw sugar, and some caramel. This beer is very sweet, but not cloying. The caramel and fruity maltiness dominates in the front with caramelized raisins in the middle, honey and a touch of smoke toward the finish, and fine, aged alcohol. Raisins, apricots, and other dried fruit really come through in the back and throughout the finish. There is no alcohol in the flavor at all. This beer is very big, yet smooth. It is full-bodied, coats the mouth very well, and provides just a touch of sweet burn through the nostrils. Damn, this is a a super fine brew! Awesome actually!
