mgoy (343), Oak Brook, Illinois, USA Feb 22, 2008 Updated: Feb 23, 2008Dogfish Head Raison D’Extra is a very strong American Strong Ale. As stated in the description this is a stronger (almost distilled) version of Raison D’Etre.
This ale is a hazy amber color with light to no head, and overly sweet with a need for more hopps. The aroma is fantastic, but the finish is a little hard. This is very similar to a very strong mead. JohnnyOS (646), Golden, Wisconsin, USA Feb 19, 2008 Pours dark amber color with average head. Aroma of vomit and prunes. Flavor to match... not a fan at all, but has one heck’uva kick! fiver29 (703), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Feb 19, 2008 Bottled 3/07. Pours a cloudy dark amber color with a nice head. Head retention is very long and laces the glass very nicely. Aroma is a mixture of alcohol and fruit with the fruit dominating. The first taste made me wish I wasn’t born. Very harsh. Once I got used to drinking what seemed like a rubbing alcohol beer it seemed to get better. I think there are some raisins in there somewhere. Overall I enjoyed this beer. I knew it would be a high alcohol beer and it did not disappoint. johndavidj99 (123), Township, Maine, USA Feb 18, 2008 Updated: Mar 1, 2008Hazy orange/amber with particles. Orange colored disappearing head. I can see the alcohol sticking to the side of the glass and smell vinegar from a distance. It smells like Verhaeghe Duchesse De Bourgogne. I smell the alcohol, a plum smell (like a dopplebock) and malts. It’s like a taste explosion that warms its way down your throat (but not unpleasant). Very well done! I like the full bodied thickness and low CO2. It has a weird over the top sweetness that takes away from flavors and an unpleasant aftertaste. Taste sticks to your tongue. kidmartinek (972), austin, Texas, USA Feb 17, 2008 Some graham and mostly alcohol aroma, Dark amber and cloudy color pour, with almost black syrup coming out of the bottom of the bottle. Small, small head. Honey mouthfeel. Burns like hard liquor. Taste pretty much like malt sugar alcohol. There’s really no other redeeming quality. And raisons? I don’t taste any. Drink this if the race is on and you want to be in the lead to get drunk. Davinci (295), Chicago, Illinois, USA Feb 15, 2008 Tasting notes from last year
Beautiful burnt orange color apears almost purple in dimmer light. Smells of sweet malts and muscat grapes. Nice pruney taste. Very rich like a desert wine. Goes down smooth with a pleasant alcohol burn. pepsican (883), The Student Ghetto, Iowa, USA Feb 10, 2008 bottle from hopscotch, awesome trader! pours a murky brownish amber with a thicker than expected off white head. You can smell this one a few feet away. Caramel, dark fruit, alcohol, and a huge sweet presence. Flavor doesn’t stray too far away. About as sweet as expected from the aroma. Dark fruits are still hanging around prety srong. A faint nuttiness is present. Finishes strong and syrupy, but not as bad as expected with the ABV. Very interesting, sad to see this one put on hold by DFH decaturstevo (1971), decatur, Tennessee, USA Feb 9, 2008 A really nice deep amber pour with lite off white head and lace mostly lace. An aroma that is fruity mostly reminds me of cherries soaked in abv. Also a bit of medicine on the nose. Very large dried fruit flavor if raisins had juice I would imagine this is what wine made from that juice would taste alot like. Hints of warmth but nothing like I expected when I saw the abv. A fine sweetness that is not thick but rich. Rich deep solid palate that lacks not much at all. A very complex beer that is very good for me.
