franksnbeans (265), Columbus, Maryland, USA Dec 24, 2007 Pours a pure bronze with a decent head that laces as it dies. Nose has big alcohol, caramel, raisins and big malt. Taste is huge, picture a barley wine and then multiply by two. Lots of flavors dominated by booze, raisin and dried fruit. Very full in the mouth with decent carbonation. Im typing this review with one eye right now. Sip at your own discretion.
glennmastrange (807), hobe sound, Florida, USA Dec 22, 2007 Bottle. Heavy malt aromas of light bread and molasses, moderate hops of spruce and light broth for the yeast, with bold raisin, light bourbon and alcohol in the background. It starts with an average sized creamy head then thins out to a thin film that’s white with fair lacing and is fully diminishing. Color is hazy brown with a red tint. Flavor is heavily sweet and lightly acidic to start and finishes heavy to harshly sweet and both lightly bitter and acidic. Palate is full bodied, syrupy and has a lively carbonation. It finishes heavily alcoholic. A little too sweet, but still an excellent accompaniment for almond, filberts and pecans. I didn’t realize the amount of COOH in this. It left me a little tweaked after 12 hrs of work and a few other beers prior. Hudspart (371), Hudsonville, Michigan, USA Dec 21, 2007 Bottle: I found this beer to be undrinkable. With all of the good beers in the world, I did not want to struggle through this one. Way too much alcohol flavor and aroma. Pours amber with a small head. Very thick - almost like a mead. Not good. mmmbeer (737), Austin, Texas, USA Dec 21, 2007 12 oz bottle poured into trappist glass- poured turbulent hazy dark brown, a thin white head around the ring of the glass. Aroma of yeast, malt, hops, and raisons, very intriguing. Hits the mouth with a touch of sweetness, a medium defined body of malt and hops, finish a pleasent burning with toffee and caramel notes (to be expected on the front end, not the back, WOW), leaves the mouth like a punk rolled by a professional buttkicker. It drinks almost like a wine, and a good one at that. Hand out 2 to a lady and it’s SEXY TIME! jcr (1137), Jasper, Indiana, USA Dec 18, 2007 Dogfish Head’s beers are interesting, if nothing else. Raison D Extra is something else — a super sweet, super ABV beer. Small, fizzy head that diminishes. Light bronw body. Malty sweet aroma with notes of caramel, raisin, brown sugar and a hint of funky yeast. The flavor is heavily sweet, lightly bitter and lightly acidic. Medium body is slightly sticky. Lively carbonation. This was so sweet, it was less than enjoyable. fattibobatti (246), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Dec 12, 2007 12 once bottle, liquorloft tallahassse. i dont have the bottle with me for this rating so im not sure which batch it is from. poured a rich dark amber with a interesting greenish tinted head. the aroma was intense and complex. strong dark fruit, raisins of course but also figs, honey and a huge hit of alcohol. the taste was something to be drank slowly (much like 120 min) sweet dark fruit, raisins dominate, candy like for a second followed by powerful alcohol warming all the way to the stomach. a great beer for a cold night as the power booze warms the entire body but is in no way unpleasant. body was syrupy thick and clings to the mouth long after swallowing. efrumtheidiot (190), Maryland, USA Dec 10, 2007 had this @ the DFH alehouse in gaithersburg. pours a murky brown with a thin white head. aroma is raisin, hops, roasty malt, dates, brown sugar, alcohol. tastes just like it smells. this one is sweet! the high alcohol bites you too (in a good way), lots of bourbon. this is one potent brew. pretty complex, though a bit too sweet for me. mid body with moderate carbonation (though it was all gone by the time i finished it, took me about an hour). if you’re into sweet, dark fruit, this one’s for you. WillieV (191), Maryland, USA Dec 9, 2007 Bottle: Pours a cloudy dark brown with a small white head. Aroma is a sickly sweet. Flavor is same. Sweet with a kick from the alcohol. Aftertaste lingers on.
