JohnnyJ (1282), Carlsbad, California, USA Jan 22, 2007 2005 12 oz bottle. Pour is clear reddish brown with absolutely no head. Aroma of raisons, dark fruit, sweet malt, and strong alcohol. Flavor is very sweet, but the alcohol is much better hidden then in the aroma. Tastes of sweet juicy raisons, dark fruit, caramel, toffee, and brown sugar. Juelze (889), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA Jan 20, 2007 Updated: Jan 21, 2007$6.49 for a single bottle, what a steal! Pours a rich coppery color with tan head. Aroma is of dark fruit, sweet malt, and candied sugar. Taste is of sweet malt, toffee, molasses, caramel, dark fruit and candied sugar. Has a syrupy consistency and is overly sweet but with as high as the alcohol is, this is an awesome brew. dhlesq (233), Thousand Oaks, California, USA Jan 18, 2007 Vinous aroma of plums, honey, toffee. Appears a hazy, ruddy, orange-red with no appreciable effervescence or head. Flavor is cloyingly sweet, with an intense alcohol burn at the end, almost entirely overunning and destroying the underlying flavor of golden raisins and plums. Palate is syrupy though not as thick as I would have expected. Overall, an interesting experiment and one that I appreciate just for the sheer inventiveness of it, however not one that I would care to drink more than a snifter of. murrayswine (101), Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, USA Jan 18, 2007 This beer is courtesy of my good friend, and fellow Marine, Troy, the owner of Warehouse Liquor in Madison.
It pours a ruddy amber/brown with no source of head.
The smell is sugar, plum, brandy, caramel, nuts, and grapes. BE WARNED- do not stick oyur nose directly into the glass, the large alcohol content will anestisize your whole olefactory sense system. Hold the glass a few inches away.
The taste is like malty brandy, which, well, I happen to love. It finishes like a congac, strong and sweet with a lot of heat.
The moutfeel is okay, but far too limp, it makes it like grain alcohol.
All in all this is a great beer that I highly recommend, but the alcohol content a limp mouthfeel bring it down a bit as a whole.
mansquito (819), Boston/Philadelphia, USA Jan 17, 2007 Has a pretty, pretty molasses colour with a tan head that is gone and leaves only lacing. It smells like nothing short of the urine of Zeus. Has an extremely thick body and an intensely sweet fruity taste. Brown sugar is a good way to describe it. High gravity warms the stomach rather well. All in all, this beer is pretty close to divinity... well not quite. Tejas (693), Dallas, Texas, USA Jan 17, 2007 Almost no head. Fruity aroma. Brown sugar flavor is heavy. Incredibly smooth and loaded with flavor. Just a touch of alcohol flavor in the finish. This was very good. I’d happily drink it again and I hate raisins. Heathen (723), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Jan 16, 2007 THOUGHTS: Sweet smelling and tasting. While the alcohol was present in the aroma and flavor, it wasn’t near what I would expect fro the ABV. The aroma and flavor was similar to some of my favorite beers (Samichlaus and Gouden Carolus) but slightly less appealing, but still a great beer.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a dark yet transluscent red with a small, white head that quickly diminished and left virtually no lacing. The aroma contained raisins, apples, brown sugar and very light alcohol. The initial flavor was lightly sweet and the finish flavor was heavy to harsh sweetness with an average duration. The body was medium to full and syrupy with an alcoholic finish. Boutip (2333), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Jan 16, 2007 Bottle courtesy of Adrian910ss: Poured a murky dark brown color ale with a small foamy head with limited retention. Aroma of dry sweet fruits (figs, plums) and some warming alcohol. Taste is also very sweet with load of dry sweet fruits but it never gets overwhelming. Texture is a bit oily with fuller body then expected (probably due to medium filtration) and some warming alcohol but again nothing too invasive. Another interesting experience by the Dogfish brewer and something I wouldn’t mind sampling again.
