kkearn (994), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 8, 2007 Updated: Feb 19, 200912oz bottle; bottled 9/29/06. Pours clear orange-amber, with a small tan head. Aroma is on the sweet side, with brown sugar, caramel, and alcohol. Flavor is sweet as well, with brown sugar, toffee, raisin, and a slight herbal quality.
Sampled most recently on draft at the Monk’s Cafe DFH dinner 12/12/06.
Dark amber color. Aroma of sugar and alcohol. The first sip warmed my entire body. Brown sugar is the primary flavor, with fruity notes like orange and plum. Sweet yet enjoyable. AlchemistZ (493), Richmond, Virginia, USA Jan 8, 2007 750ml version that was 20.2% ABV. A red hued oak color with small CO2 bubbles rising slowly to the surface, dancing their way through the residual sugar like a game of Plinko from the Price is Right played in the Bizarro world. The CO2 bubbles struggle their way through the viscous liquid like the space shuttle trying to escape the gravitational pull of the earth. Because of the density of this beer it does not want to give up its CO2 so readily and it results in a beer that initially poured with a head but it collapsed quickly and was never able to reform itself. Aroma is concentrated sugar, fermented honey, apples, and definite raisin, plum, and just about any other dark fruit that is allowed to dry on hot rocks in the mid day sun. It smells more like a mead, and particularly a cyser, than anything else. This even tastes like a very complex cyser that brown sugar, date sugar, or dark beet sugar was used. Not just a good nightcap, this was like taking 3 Tylenol PMs and a shot of Nyquil. I woke up the next morning still sitting in my living room chair. I am glad this beer was not available to me when I was in college or my housemates would probably have shaved off my eyebrows again. Panzuriel (992), Westerville, Ohio, USA Jan 1, 2007 Color is bright copper with a fine head of tan foam. Nose is sweet and carmel. Taste is a strong sweet caramel and mildly malty flavor. Body is full. Alcohol is very evident. Packs a kick from first sip. EithCubes (2140), Indiana, USA Dec 31, 2006 Bottle. Nose is more rasinous than the regular version, if that’s possible, sweet and lightly alcoholic. Fizzy, relatively thick, eggshell head. Deep cloudy amber body. Tastes way too sweet, boozy, syrupy, malty. Is there a green-capped DFH that isn’t overly sugary? Definitely a sipper. Full body, sweet malty aftertaste eventually melts into mild dryness. Overall, kinda spoils the idea of the regular d’etre, which I could drink daily. estoppel (1028), Buffalo, New York, USA Dec 29, 2006 September 2006 release. Orange-brown body, tiny white head, fruit and alchohol in the nose. Very sweet, raisins dominate, tasty, alcohol not overwhelming given the strength. asmithbeer (42), USA Dec 28, 2006 Dec 2006 release. Reddish amber color with decent head. Slightly sour and fruity aroma. Flavor is pretty sweet and heavy, very strong. Mild finish. Papsoe (14613), Frederiksberg, Denmark Dec 23, 2006 (Bottle 35,5 cl) Courtesy of acertain. Slightly hazy amber golden with a small, off-white head. Fat aroma of caramel, overripe fruit and alcohol. A bit low in carbonation. Very full-bodied, extremely sweet caramel and flavours of overripe fruit. Pretty much no bitterness. Not bad as such but simply way too much and almost cloyingly sweet. This could pass for a desert wine. 191206 frylock (996), Buffalo, New York, USA Dec 22, 2006 Aromas of brown sugar, rasins, plums, and dark malts flow from the glass. Copper colored body with a surprisingly big head. Sweet bready malts, rasins, maple sugar... loads of flavor in this one. Alcohol is hidden quite well, as there is almost no heat. Just a touch of piney bitterness keeps things from getting cloying. Very nice stuff.
