legion242 (1572), Richardson, Texas, USA Nov 8, 2006 Very nice nose, that gives away a bit of the alcohol about to bash my brains in. I could not believe that head for the amount of alcohol and the great lace. Very, Very grapey and wonderful malt abounds. The palate is amazingly smooth considering the alcohol and how present it makes itself. So glad to have this here in Texas!! RollinHard (750), Fort Worth, Texas, USA Nov 7, 2006 Pours a cloudy dark shade of copper, with no head. I got the beer splashing around in the glass too, still no head. Hmm. Anyway, the aroma was divine: strong wiffs of brandy, along with a littls raisin presence, and some toffee. Alcohol sears the aroma into the nose, so you can’t forget it. Taste is super-sweet, with lots of caramel malt flavors and sugar. Finishes with the raisin flavor; not bitter at all, but a constrasting taste nonetheless. A bit cloying, but I’m fine with that sort of texture. Low carbonation, but it’s definitely there. Overall this was very good, worth trying. Not as multi-dimensional as the 120 or WWS though. xmarcnolanx (789), Kirkwood, Missouri, USA Oct 30, 2006 Tastes very sweet and raisiny. There is no head whatsoever to this beer. The beer itself is actually very good, with no hop presence. The beer hides the alcohol well. Being so sweet, it is hard to drink too much of this, but the pleasant raisin taste makes this beer pretty decent. NachlamSie (1630), Tennessee, USA Oct 28, 2006 Bottle, thanks Iowaherkeye! pours cloudy mahogany with virtually no head. The aroma is very sweet of port, raisins, plums, just a nice array of sweet, dry notes. I can’t stand more than an ounce of port at a time, but something like this takes its essence and really makes it palatable. The sweetness is prevelant enough to make it dessertesque, but not so bad I couldn’t finish a glass. Nice dried fruits come together in the mix with a finish of dark baking spices. The alcohol is scarily hidden, it’s really only noticed in my nostrils every now and then. DFH is one of those hit or miss breweries, but this is a hit. And, it’s truly unique, keeping the brewery’s general theme. SynergyXJ (506), Blacksburg, Virginia, USA Oct 27, 2006 Bottle. Red pour, looks like Rasion D’Etre, with less head. Strong aroma of barleywine/wine/alcohol, along with raisons, caramel, etc. Incredibly intense flavor, very very strong, but still pretty smooth. beachbum25 (778), Powellville, Maryland, USA Oct 27, 2006 12 oz Bottle-Poured a reddish/brown copper color w/absolutely no head. Had an aroma reminiscent of a good Belgian Ale. Overpowering sweet flavor of raisons & figs, took a few sips to get adjusted to it. Seemed to develop a more complex aroma as it warmed. Reminded me very much of a Barley Wine. Very long smooth, sweet, finish, like an after dinner wine or liqueur You really don’t taste the high alcohol, which is saying a lot considering it’s 18.5%. Had no idea it was quite this high until I started trying to type this rating-and had trouble hitting the right keys!! nijuro (63), USA Oct 22, 2006 12 oz. purchased at brewery 10/2006. muted aroma of sweet raisin liquour. Sticky round mouthfeel with figs, raisins, dates and caramel. agree with the port-like qualities previously mentioned. Well ballanced and not overly "hot." nice sweet/bitter contrasts in the long finish. PorterPounder (3132), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Oct 19, 2006 Whole Foods, Alexandria, Va. - 12 oz bottle. Murky, dark orange pour - hardly any head to speak of. Aroma of alcohol, sweet candy, some raisins. Bold flavor, raisins, dates, baked brown bread, alcohol soaked pears. Note some port-like accents as well. Mouthfeel is very thick and the alcohol is hidden extremely well.
