nefarious (202), Clarkston, Michigan, USA Mar 13, 2009 This is one big Son-of-a-bitch. Big pour with the color of a dead leaf in the fall. ginormus swett aroma of sugar, vanilla, coconut and dark fruits. lots of sediment with a nice one finger off white head. holy hell it burnsgoing down....not in a bad way though....and the taste is alot of the same as the aroma, but the roasted malts tend to come out at the end. the finish is very long hops, malts and coffee all peek thier head out on a long finish. solid pour for sure. hirigalzkar (550), Stockholm, Sweden Mar 9, 2009 Bottle. Look: Brown-orange. Golden head. Smell: Vinegar, alcohol, butter and raisins.Taste: Sweet and oaky beer. Raisin, vanilla, soy, chocolate. The alcohol is well hidden. Overall: Good winey dessert beer. finol (475), Nacka (Stockholm), Sweden Mar 8, 2009 355ml bottle from Ölbutikken.
Dark brown orange with a yellow head.
Smells like a barley wine with raisins and soy. Tastes of oak, wine, burbon and some alcohol. Suttree (2701), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Mar 8, 2009 2006 bottle. Cloudy orange red, virtually no head. Very sweet. The raisins are front and center. as is quite a bit of bourbon an vanilla. Very heavy and verging on cloying with the sweetness. Not a bad beer by any stretch, but also a bit of chore to drink. thefrutigers (100), , Arizona, USA Mar 7, 2009 12 oz bottle: Poured opaque red with a very thin minimal head. Smells of raisins, malt, and alcohol. Flavor of dates, raisins, and malt. Thick in the mouth and alcohol not too over powering. I really enjoyed this and found it very pleasant to drink.
nuplastikk (1161), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Mar 6, 2009 Updated: Apr 23, 200912oz bottle. Been looking forward to/dreading this bad boy for awhile. Ruby brown-red color, opaque. No head. Hardcore raisin and cognac aroma. Reminiscent of a Quad in some ways, the raisins work well to smooth it out. Somehow doesn’t finish harshly, fairly remarkable. The aroma really seems harsh to me, makes me wonder how this would be fresh. Syrupy and thick, this is above par for the huge ABV, but I still find it a little odd and harsh. GAManiac (1124), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Mar 5, 2009 12oz bottle poured into a snifter.
Pours a hazy, dark caramel brown that shows a tea-colored amber when held up to the light. There is a very small head that recedes immediately to a ring with no lacing.
Aroma is massively sweet with tons of caramel sweetness and dark fruits, especially raisins. There are hints of brown sugar and plenty of alcohol in the nose as well.
Taste has even more dark fruit sweetness, with raisins and plums, and lots of brown sugar. There’s additional vanilla with an interesting spiciness in the finish.
The mouthfeel is super slick with minimal carbonation and leaves the palate coated with a boozy sweetness that lingers forever.
This is definitely a big beer though I’m not sure if it tastes like a 20% ABV beer. It’s still pretty boozy for the style and, while drinkable for the ABV, is a sipper overall. Blaketj80 (78), Oklahoma, USA Feb 27, 2009 Smells of sweet barley and alchohol. Light carb and pours with little to no head. Very pungent flavor. Velvity with wonderful complexity. Sweet and slightly nutty with fruity notes. Pleasant and enjoyable while warming you up in a hurry.
