I will admit that I am not a fan of high alcohol beers nor am I a particular fan of raisins...but my boyfriend got a bottle of this and wanted me to split it with him, so I decided to try it...pours a light brown, cloudy, no head and a rather syrupy texture. Aroma is awful--much too overpowering and so repulsive to me that I actually had to pinch my nose while drinking it. Aroma is strong of alcohol, brown sugar, raisin. Flavor is a little better than the aroma- brown sugar, alcohol, sweetness. Super rich and super sweet. Too one-dimensional for such a high alcohol beer, it is not balanced enough, creating a huge alcohol mess. I just don’t think the body of Raison D’Etre is strong enough to handle the 18.5%. I could only take about 10 or so sips. Won’t be having this again...

Have had this many times. I feel it ages really well especially after Slander opened that aged Magnum at BCTC. Dark in color and really rich as it pours. Aroma is rich, sweet, caramel, molasses, raisins and grain. Flavor is sweet and slightly boozy with raisins and sticky caramel. Nice.

Bottle thanks to ericandersnavy. Pours a cloudy red/brown with beige head. Aroma of strong raison/dark fruit. Flavor is of strong dark fruit & alcohol. Palate is full body, medium carbonation....Overall, clears the sinuses and warms you up....good dessert beer.

Sweet, malty, alcohol aroma. Pours a rich amber, no head. The first sip i got a little alcohol burn to it but just the first sip then it was smooth sailing, Does not taste like 20% to me! Big malt with fruit (the raison), surprisingly easy to drink, this one could get you in some serious trouble.

Clear reddish orange. Huge raisin and aged fruit smell. Very intense smell. Wow very nice taste! Very tingly upfront that changes to an old raisin taste. Not bad at all. Old fruit that warms the belly.

Sampled at the DC/MD/VA/WV/PA Ratebeer Gathering 11/20/04. Pours a coppery orange. Alcohol very present in the nose. Has notes of dark fruits, caramel, hops, molasses and roasty malts plus more alcohol. Pretty full and round mouthfeel. I really enjoyed this one but could not drink too much at once.

Thanks to SoLan for my bottle bottled on 8/31/05. Poured a dark copper color with zero head, rousing it elicits no head. Musky raisin, apricot, dried apple, with some dark brown sugar aromas. Alcohol present on the nose, but not as much as anticipated for 18%. Despite there being not much visual indicators of carbonation, it’s there and compliments the sipping nature of the beer. Sweet raisiny taste with some spice notes and a very warm alcoholic finish.
