blipp (1630), Newark, New Jersey, USA Jan 9, 2009 Bottled 2/9/2007, so just under 2 years old. Pours clear red with a pinkish head. juicy citric aroma with sweet fruity and vinous notes. The flavor has a nice berry like sweetness with citrus fruits and hints of spices. Interesting. bethmatt0421 (317), Covington, Kentucky, USA Jan 3, 2009 My 300th rating woohoo! Pinot comes through well, also orange peel, light and dark fruits swirl together wonderfully. A good complex brew. DFH is genius. Hoptagon (132), Arlington, Virginia, USA Dec 22, 2008 750ml Bottled on 02/09/07. Color is a dark reddish-orange with a thin, quickly dissipating head. Nose is complex with hints of caramel, Pinot Noir and Belgian yeast. Flavor changes throughout with dark fruit and candy sugar up front followed by zesty and slightly bitter orange and lemon flavors and then finishing with a strong dry oak character. Would strongly recommend aging this beer, I have had it freshly bottled and on draft and did not enjoy it either time. This bottle after nearly two years of aging is fantastic. Flavors have now settled and there is finally a sense of cohesion to the overall taste of the beer. The oak character has mellowed, but is still prevalent and the initial tartness has subsided. Wish I had some more of this. ROGUE (621), Newark, Delaware, USA Dec 18, 2008 750ml bottle. Pours a dark, cloudy amber color with a thin foamy white head that quickly setles. Citrus orange zest aroma with malt and smokey oak hints. Very smooth and well balanced with sweet citrus fruit and lemon peel countering the smokey oak dryness. Slightly sour aftertaste. The alcohol is hardly noticable.
Hawksfan17 (717), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 10, 2008 This red pour smells like sweet, rich, dark fruit. You can see the orange peel floating around. It is sweet but also very strong in flavor which is probably due to the 10%. ajwilliams (118), , Indiana, USA Nov 28, 2008 Belgian yeast right off the bat, with strong hints of the pinot noir following. Mandarin oranges, vanilla, banana, brown sugar, apricots, yeast, and alcohol, with other complexities that escape me after having felt the effects of a full bottle. The oak it there, but in a way that you might miss if it weren’t for the description on the bottle. More carbonation towards the end of the bottle (is this possible?) FROTHINGSLOSH (1961), GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 26, 2008 Sampled from a 225.6 oz brown bottle this beer poured a red-copper color with a large pink-white head and lots of floating chunks. The aroma was faintly sweet and woody. The flavor was sweet, woody, fruity and bitter with a touch of cherry and apricot. There was a strong tart, tangy and bitter finish that detracted. The body was thick and the alcohol well hidden. Interesting but rather disappointing. chicagobears (336), Elk Grove Village, Illinois, USA Nov 21, 2008 My Dad picked this one out after winning a bet ;) I’m not sure if winning the bet makes this taste better, but it tastes damn good.
I noticed the Wit taste from the first sip. The complexities were more noticeable as it warmed. Strong and quite sweet. Coriander and peppery spices are notable.
The wine and oak characteristic are an afterthought, then again I’m not a wine connoisseur.
