Commercial Description:
A big, Belgian-style Wit brewed with coriander and orange peel and fermented with Pinot Noir juice. After fermentation a fraction of the batch is aged in Oregon Pinot Noir barrels, and another fraction is aged on oak staves. The beer is blended together before packaging. This has been one of our most popular Limited Edition beers at both our Rehoboth Beach, DE brewpub and at festivals. It successfully marries the refreshing citrusy qualities of a Belgian-style white beer with the robust complexity of a bold red wine.

Bottle. Deep amber pour, cloudy and with a large & creamy off-white head. Had a soft wheaty aroma with very light citrus and spice accents, with the orange sweetness certainly more pronounced on tasting. A fuller body here than I was expecting, and a pretty harsh alcohol finish that caught me a bit off-guard at first. Quality.

25.6oz bottle-pours a rich off white head and amber/brown color. Aroma is musty, light/medium malt, herbal, secondary spices-coriander?, barnyard/wood, some yeast. Taste is medium malt-caramel, wood, herbal/spice-coriander/pepper, secondary citrus/fruit, alcohol. OK carbonation. The spices are a bit dominant. No pinot noir. Sipping. Occasional. Thanks to Joe-jwc215 for sharing.

Feb ’07 bottle shared by Jason. Clear red-hued amber body under a small white head. Woody, dark spicy aroma with a clear grape influence. Pretty similar flavor but with a noticeable alcohol bite. There’s a lot going on here but it’s nothing compelling. I’d peg this not as a train wreck of flavor but perhaps a fender bender of flavor.

From bottle at the Winder Hotel. Nice wheat aroma with sourish tang, coriander and orange peels with some musk melon and mild yeast aroma. Reminiscent in nose of a Weizenbock. Cloudy golden-amber with thin off-white head. Meidum-heavy body with medium carbonation. Wheat and light honey, candi sugar, orange and mild spice. Alcohol sweetness with caramel. Musky and yeasty, with a mild bitter orange and hops finish. Tasty with mild alcohol warming. Nice beer.

This is pretty good after what I expected from the description. The aroma is citrusy sweet with notes of coriander and spices indicative of a witbier. It tastes like a witbier with a bite. The Pinot Noir juice is noticeable as a bite after the swallow. It’s pretty good.

Pours a hazy reddish orange with a nice fluffy white head. The nose is fruits, orange, maybe a little cherry. Nice cherry and yeasty components in the mouth. Finishes bitter with a nice dryness. I have actually held on to this bottle from last year. Not bad.

2008-06-01. Hazy golden orange, smallish white head. (3+) Mild aroma, touch of alcohol, muted fruit, something vaguely woody. Muddled flavour, fruit, light bitterness in the finish lingers. (6+) Average palate. Meh. Not unpleasant but does not inspire me to return for a second glass. Bottle, Mondial, Montreal, 4T
