tennisjoel (931), Shakopee, Minnesota, USA Jun 1, 2008 Sampled at OSLO/Guerde Tasting
Pour is copper red with a white head. Aroma of cherry, orange, belgian spices, and some raison/plum. Very interesting experiment. Good stuff. kevd193213 (477), Hope Valley, Rhode Island, USA Jun 1, 2008 Bottle. Thick reddish brown color with nice lacing. Aroma of raisins, caramel and yeast. Taste of fruit, yeast, bananas and spices. Nice finish. Good, but not worth the money spent. islay (470), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA May 28, 2008 Small sample at OSLO and Guerde’s tasting on Friday, 5-23-08. Cool red color with a white head (hey, I get it!). Mead-like, fruity smell features a tomato juice scent. Interesting taste: Fruity (orange, tomato), dull, and vegetal (celery). Medium to heavy body. Lively in the palate. An extra point in the overall impression for uniqueness. lithy (1600), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA May 28, 2008 Light brown almost peachy color with a light white head (with maybe a hint of pink or is that the pinot noir juice playing tricks in my mind). You can smell the pinot juice even away from the glass during the pour. Up close the smell is more like a wit beer. A little spicy like a tripel with a smooth mouthfeel. The taste is very strong initially of wine notes with a spiciness at the end and a lingering spice on the finish. Not especially complex, it is what they describe. My oenophiliac friend enjoyed it more than me jgb9348 (2492), Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA May 26, 2008 Strong hazy white coloured body with a light ruby tint and a thinnish white head. Aroma of nice malt, some spice and a ton of sweet flavoured fruits. Medium-bodied; Strong raisin and prune flavoured body with a good malt backbone and some yeast coming through. Aftertaste shows some good flavours, mostly malty coming through with some mild spices. Overall, a decent belgie beer with some light kicks of hops but nothing else. I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchasd from Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia in 2007, sampled on 26-May-2008. OSLO (825), Perth, Australia May 26, 2008 [Bottle, thanks STLWill!] Pours hazy red with a small pink head. Aroma is vinous with a good deal of coriander. Taste is somewhat tart with a lot of the pinot showing through. Medium mouthfeel. An interesting beer, and although I do like beer aged in pinot barrels, this one wasn’t quite as good as I was hoping. KnN (715), Greenbelt, Maryland, USA May 25, 2008 Poured a nice reddish color with a medium white head. Aroma reminded me of some of the better belgians I’ve had; spicy and sweet. The kicker with this beer though was that underlying grape/wine aroma. I sampled this on the same evening I had a Grape Ale from Sam Adams Longshot contest. The difference is astounding . While the grape ale was cloying, this beer was a bit more sharp. The wine added some great complexity and interest to a beer that already has a wonderful Belgian backbone. Great beer. Guerde (696), Welcome, Minnesota, USA May 23, 2008 (bottle thanks STLWill) Pours red with a white head that leaves sticky lacing. Aroma of light oak, tomato, grain, and V-8 juice, and orange peel. Taste of beet, light sweetness, some grape and spice, but not too much else. Medium mouthfeel.
