illinismitty (1790), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Apr 28, 2008 Bottle from Rozi’s, I purchased about a year ago. Pours red, slight haze with a dense, off white head, and nice lacing. Aroma of oak, berries, and malt. The pinot noir and spices really dominate the start, and this finishes semi-dry dry and peppery, with lots of wood flavor. Alcohol is very apparent as well, but does not distract too much. This one is a bit messy and harsh, and the malt profile is overpowered by everything else that went into this beer, especially the Pinot Noir. This is an interesting concept, but falls a little short for me. brigg (213), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Apr 27, 2008 (bottle) A cloudy amber body and thin head. Aroma is sweet and slightly tart fruit - maybe a hint of orange, alcohol, and yeast. Flavor has lots of sweet malt, but not overly sweet. The alcohol is strong, too, and warms it up as you drink. I didn’t think of it as a Wit at all, but very good nonetheless. Creamy full body. I would drink it again. badlizard (2325), Berkeley, California, USA Apr 27, 2008 bottle from archerliquors. Clear pinkish golden with a fizzy white head. Wine, orange, and clove aroma -- quite nice. Buttery slightly bright palate. It has the witbeir qualities of orange and spice, notably coriander, with some really interesting red wine character that works magnificently together. Excellent. Papsoe (14642), Frederiksberg, Denmark Apr 26, 2008 (Bottle 75 cl) Courtesy of boboski. Pours a hazy, reddish amber with a slightly reddish head. Lightly tart aroma also with fruit, yeast, diacetyl and alcohol. Quite full-bodied with sweetish malt and fruity notes - somewhat berry-like. Surprisingly hoppy with a somewhat burning alcohol in the finish. Didn’t really pick up any hints of a Wit in here. 190408 dmac (1420), Toms River, New Jersey, USA Apr 26, 2008 750 ml bottle thanks to broncoman, thanks Darin. Pours a coudy orange with an average size white head. Aroma of grass, yeast, coriander, citrus and some vinous notes. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Flavor of coriander, yeast, bread, fruit and slight wine. Okay beer but I found the coriander distracting and overpowered the vinous notes. travita (1861), Frisco, Texas, USA Apr 25, 2008 Orange to amber in color with a nice beige head. Yeast and sediment in suppession. Fruity in the smell and taste. Alcohol is appearant. Earthy and malts as well. Beaver (588), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Apr 23, 2008 750ml bottle. Pours a very hazy copper orange with a thin and fine white head that quickly recedes to a thin film that leaves some lacing.
The aroma is very wit-like with funky yeast and some bright fruitiness, bananas, cloves and a little vinous wine.
The flavor is earthy yeast, some grapes and citric fruit, quite a bit of vinous alcohol and a fairly grassy and almost tarry bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with soft carbonation.
Overall, this "imperial wit" is not bad, but it is not well balanced and a bit of a mess.
cfranz (261), Acton, Massachusetts, USA Apr 21, 2008 Cloudy orange with a whitish head. Fruity aroma - strong citrus. Strong on all accounts - not necessarily bold - but strong alcohol, fruity, bubbly.e
