jstraw (750), Chicago, Illinois, USA Feb 8, 2008 Plum amber with light, off-white head / Nose of grapes and dark fruit / Medium, estery, malty body with good finish and some alcohol bite / Flavors of banana, plum, orange, caramel, cloves, and coriander / Pinot noir aspect understated - a fine Belgian ale. RblWthACoz (963), Brooklyn, New York, USA Feb 4, 2008 Pours a ruby hue with a nice off white head that falls rather quickly and leaves some lacing. Nose is grapey and fruity. Flavor is quite unique. Strong and noticeable fruit tones mix with a mild alcohol presence. Odd wine mixture that slightly reminds me of something along the St. Lamvinus line, but not quite that in the long run. So we have the fruity and earthy mix here with a nice full carbonation and smooth liquid touch. Overall this is a very interesting beer to say the least. Could it be a staple in my beer diet? I’d have to say no. But still interesting enough to try. Snojerk321 (1919), San Diego, California, USA Feb 4, 2008 750ml bottle acquired in trade with beachbum25. Poured how I expected, a mostly clear ruby with an almost non existent head. Nose of orange peel, spice and some oak. Flavor was fairly sweet and oaky. Would love to try this beer again when I’m over my cold.......;( SQNfan (591), Wheaton, Illinois, USA Jan 24, 2008 Drank at 2007 Dark Lord Day: After drinking the Dark Lord and mainly IPA’s, etc., this did come off almost wine-like showing the bright red fruit of Pinot Noir. This is a very interesting beer that would go very well with food and is very interesting. While not a "go-to" beer, I would enjoy drinking this occasionally throughout the year. swoopjones (1862), Buffalo, New York, USA Jan 15, 2008 Bottle. Wasn’t sure of what to expect from this one. Pinkish red color. Lots of carbonation. Sweet tasting with ornage & other citrus. Slight wit spiciness rounded out nicely with red grape taste. Very good & want more thedm (3833), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Jan 7, 2008 This bottled brew from a bottle shop was bottled on 02/12/07 and poured a small sized head of foamy finely sized white and pink hued bubbles that were mostly lasting and left behind a hazy typically carbonated brown colored body. The aroma was malty and grape like. The mouth feel was tingly and vinous at the start, crisp in the middle and had a strong coriander note that came out in the finish with a strong vinous aftertaste. The interesting flavor contained notes of malt hops coriander and was floral. This one was not much to my liking. It was not bad, but was simply not something I would buy again. techdiver (22), USA Jan 4, 2008 Pours a reddish amber with modest head that fades quickly to a thin cap and leaves slight lacing.
Complex nose giving indications of orange, grape, and hops.
Taste is even more complex. Sweet start leads to a vague awareness of alcohol in the finish. In between there’s orange, grape, oak, and spice.
Medium mouthfeel, could use a bit more carbonation.
Drinkability good for this very different wit.
jpm30 (1588), East Central, Georgia, USA Dec 29, 2007 Capped 750 ml. brown bottle, bottling date on the shoulder of the bottle (02/12/07), sampled in a tumbler.
The body definitely has a wine-like appearance, reddish brown with pink highlights and bright orange hues. The pink and white head rose quickly and fell just as quickly into a thin bubbly lacing, light amount of splotchy lace at the top of the glass. The carbonation is quite active, plentiful supply of micro bubbles just beneath the surface.
There is nice sweet and sour effect going on in the smell. Orangey citric juice mixed with red grape juice gives the aroma some punchiness. Further whiffs really brings out the orange peel and grainy wheat malts. There is enough sweetness that I am wondering if oats are also being utilized. At the edges is a good combination of wine woody barrels and solvent alcohol. I am finding the smell to be very enjoyable.
The buoyant carbonation provides the body with a firmly light feel, airy and softly crisp. The taste is a delectable balance between orange/lemon citric witbier flavors and Pinot noir juice, the sweet and sourness of both come to forefront. As it warms the sticky coriander and tingling spices make their presence felt. There is a mild grainy twang from the wheat malts. Mellow wine barrel and solvent alcohol flavors bring a soothing warmth to the palate. The finish is sweet and semi-dry, reminds me of some west central and southern Illinois light red wines I’ve tried.
I loved the Red & White from DFH, I thought it was a concept that works, a testament to the inventiveness of the brewers.
