Commercial Description:
A big, Belgian-style Wit brewed with coriander and orange peel and fermented with Pinot Noir juice. After fermentation a fraction of the batch is aged in Oregon Pinot Noir barrels, and another fraction is aged on oak staves. The beer is blended together before packaging. This has been one of our most popular Limited Edition beers at both our Rehoboth Beach, DE brewpub and at festivals. It successfully marries the refreshing citrusy qualities of a Belgian-style white beer with the robust complexity of a bold red wine.

Appearance: Pours a light, pinkish body (like six steps off from the color of cranberry juice) with a tall, light pink head. Smell: A wheat-filled aroma with notes of candyish cherry and orange, as well as a few hints of coriander and a dash of cheap chardonnay. Taste: The type of syrupy sweet fruit flavors of cherry, orange, and grape that you’d expect from a kids juicebox. The combination of spice, alcohol, oakiness, and a regrettable plasticy taste made for a rather caustic finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Creamy mouthfeel. Drinkability: The Black & Blue doesn’t taste like Red & White, but they are going for the same vibe all the way through. Unfortunately, I didn’t care for either of them.

750 mL bottle. Poured a hazy reddish orange color. Head wad white and left some decent lace behind. Smelled of cherry and mowed grass/hay. Strange mix of aromas. Slightly sweet and smooth on the tongue. The flavors are very mellow with hints of cherry and coriander. Pretty good.

bottle, from Cary Wholefoods. Ok aroma. Sweet, yeasty fruity. Weird. Sometimes I got some strong scents other times subtle. When cold it had a cherry streak about it, but as it warmed the wine and barrel took over and by the end it was fairly oaky. Clean brownish orange color, small head that faded quickly to a ring. Ok lacing. Sweet flavor with bite. Pretty much like aroma. Maybe more wine like than aroma. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel, sweet dry finish. Well, not a beer I’d would enjoy alot of. There were moments I liked. The initial fruitiness of the aroma and flavor were quite nice, but just kinda fell apart for me as it warmed (seems to be a trend for me) Got real woody towards the end.

From a 750. Big thanks to Hopscotch for shipping this intriguing beer to me. Pours clear reddish / copper with a rocky off-white / pinkish head. The aroma has heavy vineous notes while having the wit standard notes of orange and coriander. There is also some light banana and smooth wheat. Medium / full body that has an underlying sharp carbonation lurking under the velvety smooth slick body. The flavor starts with some orange, but is quickly overtaken by a thick vineous trait (pinot, I’m sure), coriander spice flows seemlessly with it. There is a cane sugar sweetness as well. The finish brings in more spice and a grape-like tartness. For using a dry wine base and a fairly dry wit style, this is one heck of a sweet beer. A good beer, but not great. I expected more.

Magnificent aroma, spicy, outhouse, malty, very fruity with oranges and coriander. Very well balanced, full palate and a delicate brew.

Pours hazy orangish witha medium cream head of fine bubbles. Aroma is of cream, soft hay, coriander and pepper. Flavor is of cream, brown malt, oak, a slight grape, coriander, a slight alcohol fume. Its an interesting balance between the sweet maltiness, grape, and the dry oakiness. Full body creamy palate.

750ml. Pink, ruby color. Aroma of an empty wine barrel. Very sweet and juicy malt. Very pleasant hop finish. I love the balance. Don’t find too much flavor here.

The body was medium red with a light pink head. The appearance was the best thing about this beer. The aroma was light grape juice and colby cheese. The taste had notes of light white grape juice and some As much as anything this reminded me of grape soda mixed with ginger ale. I am missing what others see in this one.
