Commercial Description:
A big, Belgian-style Wit brewed with coriander and orange peel and fermented with Pinot Noir juice. After fermentation a fraction of the batch is aged in Oregon Pinot Noir barrels, and another fraction is aged on oak staves. The beer is blended together before packaging. This has been one of our most popular Limited Edition beers at both our Rehoboth Beach, DE brewpub and at festivals. It successfully marries the refreshing citrusy qualities of a Belgian-style white beer with the robust complexity of a bold red wine.

Fiery orange pour with copper highlights and an ivory head that has decent retention and lacing. Interesting aroma of coriander, orange peel, oak, and grape. Flavor is complex and masks the alcohol incredibly well. Flavor includes all listed in the aroma but also has a very wine-like quality with cherry skins and yeast. Medium mouthfeel. Just spent a small fortune trying to get all of the locally available DFH’s I hadn’t rated. This one, I might get again to share with my wine-lover friends.

I’m not sure exactly what I just drank, but it was good! Some kind of Belgian wit with grape juice, only Dogfish Head could think up something like this. Pours a watermelon color with foamy head. Woody and fruity notes hit the nose. Flavor was, well, um, I can’t really describe it exactly. It drank like a fine wine and a fine liquor with the dry finish of a great beer. The alcohol warmth is evident, but not overpowering. I will get this again because it was so unusual and delicious.

Bottle: Murky dark gold color with a white head that lasts for about 3-5 minutes. The aromas are rich and tangy. You can definitely sense the coriander and orange zest. The flavor is powerful in that you can detect the 10%, but it is also smooth and full of flavor. I kind of expected way more of a wine flavor. I could taste the high yeast from the Belgian style. Oak was a definite presence and seemed to mellow out the flavors making it close to perfect.

On tap @ Rattle’N’Hum. 06 Vintage. Orange/Copper Pour. Orange plus wine aroma. Flavor isn’t sweet nor tart. Will try this again with a better clear palet and thought process more of wine. DFH is good at hiding 10& alcohol.

On draught at R’N’H (NYC): Tastes like orange peel, grape leaves, and red wine. At first was turned off by the initial taste, but quickly acquired what DFH was trying to get at. Alcohol is masked fairly well- definitely comparable to drinking a wine. It’s good.

Fruity nose with a nice head, tho it fades quickly. The grapes are an interesting and welcome addition to the wit style, and the higher abv rounds it out nicely. As described, its a nice segway from wine to beer.

Pours a transparent amber brown with a health lasting thin white head. Smells of grapes and leaves with a bit of alcohol. Taste is of orange peel, grapes. This is a nice surprise, the alcohol is covered well and the style is unique and fun.
