sneagrams3 (1704), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Jun 9, 2007 750 ml bottle. Filtered and ruby hued. Soapy bubbled white head. Vanilla and bread in the nose. Red berries and toast. Honey and vinuous. First of all...to much carbonation. Too medicinal. Initial mellow smooth flavor. Then total alcohol. Total vine. Odd. This has to be an acquired flavor. I, for one, have not acquired. Big bold fruity flavors. Reminds me of sangria. But also has cider notes. Impressive and formidable, but not for me. oakbluff (298), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Jun 9, 2007 I was really looking forward to this unique treat. Picked up in Hudson, Wisc.
Pours out a rose colour with a fluffy white head. Smells like welch’s grape juice-? Taste- really boozy up front- surprising amount of alcohol in the taste. I can sort of pick up the coriander, not much hop to speak of. Wine and booze. Medium carbonation, fairly thick mouthfeel. Can’t really tell that this was aged in oak. It actually got better as it warmed, or maybe the booze just got to my head by the time I finished it. A unique and interesting beer and I am glad I tried it, but I don’t think I would shell out for it again.
punkrkr27 (608), Berkley, Michigan, USA Jun 9, 2007 Copper pour with a ruby highlight.. Mild, sweet, vinous aroma. Obviously vinous flavor with a dose of candi sugar. Thin body with a dry finish. I was disappointed with this one. pnista (1008), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Jun 6, 2007 Bright blood red, a bit darker than a rose, dense but quickly thinning pink tinged head. Light wheat banana esters, orange peel, cinnamon, coriander, a bit of pink pepper corn, hints of raspberry. Not thin, but not super heavy, doesn’t come across as syrupy though the carbonation is low. A big sweet wheat with alcohol, oak, and a bit of ctirus rind tartness, not to mention a good dose of light spicing. Pink peppercorns, very light bodied red win, but oaky flavors like a more full bodied red. A dry fruity finish comes out of the sweetness. Alcohol lingers slightly along with the oak. The sweetness not being too full is well balance by the oak and alcohol. For half the price, I could get used to drinking this beer. Floback (333), Naples, Florida, USA Jun 6, 2007 Updated: Oct 3, 2007Courtesy of Haskell’s. Once I had this beer for the first time, I ended up going back to Haskell’s for more until I bought out their whole supply. Straight from the bottle, my nose could identify this to be a Belgian Strong. Smelled like Duval or Gulden Draak. No lacing. Poured a fingernail-thick pinkish-white head that vanished within 60 seconds. I expected some sourness fom the aroma, but my first sip was very acidic. Eventually, I could detect the coriander and a wine-like grape aftertaste. Very malty with a body that envelopes the mouth. The alcohol warmed my throat almost instantaneously. Good brew crazyvin (1246), New York, USA Jun 5, 2007 Poured a reddish amber hue with a white frothy head which had some red highlights. Aroma was a mix of grapes, orange and some spice. Flavor was mildly acidic with the wine notes, a slight spice at the end. I really could not sense any oak notes. merlin48 (509), New Tazewell, Tennessee, USA Jun 4, 2007 Looks nice in the goblet. A mostly clear pinkish purple body with a nice pinkish white head. Aroma of berries and grapes with hints of oak and booze. Tastes weird, but improves as it warms. Bitter and phenolic for the most part. Spicy presence is too understated to add much. Wheat character is lost in the booziness. Couldn’t finish it. My least favorite DFH for sure. Suttree (2702), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Jun 3, 2007 Bright red and a pinkish head that fades to white. Nice aroma of Citrus - mango, orange - some spices, red wine, and, uh, red plum jam? Flavor is very winey up front. Some molasses, some brown sugar, but mostly red wine. The citrus and spice I could get in the aroma is completely lost in the flavor. Now, normally I don’t like to make suggestions, but The Bride suggested, and I agree, that some sourness would add some zing and really wake it up. Anyway, as it warms, a nice marzipan note emerges, as well as cherry and raisin. But a touch of lambic character would be nice here.
