Commercial Description:
A big, Belgian-style Wit brewed with coriander and orange peel and fermented with Pinot Noir juice. After fermentation a fraction of the batch is aged in Oregon Pinot Noir barrels, and another fraction is aged on oak staves. The beer is blended together before packaging. This has been one of our most popular Limited Edition beers at both our Rehoboth Beach, DE brewpub and at festivals. It successfully marries the refreshing citrusy qualities of a Belgian-style white beer with the robust complexity of a bold red wine.

Poured a reddish amber hue with a white frothy head which had some red highlights. Aroma was a mix of grapes, orange and some spice. Flavor was mildly acidic with the wine notes, a slight spice at the end. I really could not sense any oak notes.

Looks nice in the goblet. A mostly clear pinkish purple body with a nice pinkish white head. Aroma of berries and grapes with hints of oak and booze. Tastes weird, but improves as it warms. Bitter and phenolic for the most part. Spicy presence is too understated to add much. Wheat character is lost in the booziness. Couldn’t finish it. My least favorite DFH for sure.

Bright red and a pinkish head that fades to white. Nice aroma of Citrus - mango, orange - some spices, red wine, and, uh, red plum jam? Flavor is very winey up front. Some molasses, some brown sugar, but mostly red wine. The citrus and spice I could get in the aroma is completely lost in the flavor. Now, normally I don’t like to make suggestions, but The Bride suggested, and I agree, that some sourness would add some zing and really wake it up. Anyway, as it warms, a nice marzipan note emerges, as well as cherry and raisin. But a touch of lambic character would be nice here.

This begins by looking amazing, a reddish-amber with a thin white head that sticks around and caps the beer. The aroma starts off as a blending of red wine, spice, and a touch of wheat. Very noticeable coriander notes, with a hint of oak, and the dryness of a red wine. However, for the price, there’s a lot better out there.

Pours red, very clear, with a soft but strong head. Sweet fruit and citrus in the beginning, wine and wood aren’t overpowering, but a nice compliment. Not as dry as I was hoping for. Finish had a light tartness.

The nose comes across as a typical belgian with a hint of semi-sour raspberry. The taste is of a rich, woody complex beer that has a hint of sour berries at the end. This beer is not just a crazy mixture, but very well put together. All in all this was good, not $13 dollars good, but I’m glad I tried it.

This was all TOO easily quaffable for me. I was initially intimidated by size, thinking that I might be either overwhelmed by flavor or lose interest unless I shared the 750. Nope, neither the volume of beer nor the whole of it put me off which would have posed a far greater problem had I another bottle and indulged. The ease that I found in drinking this - light to me for the strength - was rather amazing. Very nice stuff and despite not being as wine like as I imagined prior to consumption, would probably be much enjoyed by a wine enthusiast.

Dot matrix on the neck says this one ws bottled on 2/12/07. Pours a pretty sunset cranberry with an inital head of light beige fluff that reduces to a thin ring. Laces in droopy bunting. Aromas of sweet red wine, woody pulp, and a smidge of orangey oils. Sharp, yet smooth, flavors greet the palate. Woody barrel feel is immediately noticed after the swallow. Orange peel and a citrus splash. Winey notes are easily found. Mouthfeel is both prickly and smooth, a balanced dichotomy. Quite drinkable. I had reservations going into this, but in the end I rather enjoyed it.
