Commercial Description:
A big, Belgian-style Wit brewed with coriander and orange peel and fermented with Pinot Noir juice. After fermentation a fraction of the batch is aged in Oregon Pinot Noir barrels, and another fraction is aged on oak staves. The beer is blended together before packaging. This has been one of our most popular Limited Edition beers at both our Rehoboth Beach, DE brewpub and at festivals. It successfully marries the refreshing citrusy qualities of a Belgian-style white beer with the robust complexity of a bold red wine.

750 ml. bottle. Pours a clear, amber, red - very similar to a rose wine. Aroma of orange juice, wheat, and a little spice. Flavors of orange peel, coriander and sweet malt. There’s also a mild, underlying bitterness. The finish is dry and a little bitter. Interesting and different.

Hazy, amber, pink grapefuit hue. Decent, medium sized bubbly head. Aroma has the Wit characteristics, lots of oranges but more of the flesh to me rather then the peel. Medium bodied, creamy, cranberry tart, tangy with alot of citrus and spices. Firm maltiness emerges as brew warms. The pinot juice provides the tangyness and it plays well with the spices and body. Alcohol is in the mix but not a sore thumb by any means. Very unique, transcends the style and almost beer itself. Bravo for pushing the envelope. Why wouldnt this be labeled a fruit beer considering the Pinot Noir juice?

750 ml bottle

This was $11.99 at the local bottle shop. I was a little skeptical at first but my wife eventually bought it anyways (due to the pinot factor). As it turns out this was certainly a very unique beer but one that would not have me running for more. Try to grab a sample at a tasting if you can or split it with a few friends.

Aroma / Appearance - The peppery nose immediately betrayed the vinous heritage of this release. Along with it were hay, presumably from the wit and watermelon rind. Behind it all was vanilla and cloves. The aroma did not disappoint my expectations. The body was not bad either - an unusual cherry red that I normally associate with krieks. Chunky lacing clung to the sides leaving strata behind.

Flavor / Palate - The bite is not nearly nearly as good as the bark. Vinous notes warm the palate before yeasty chocolate cake, wheat bread, gingersnaps and spices step in. The finish reminds of baked Lays. There is evidence of the pinot noir but it does not stand out nearly as much as in the nose. For whatever reason, perhaps its hybrid nature, this did not excite me that much. Still it does deviate from the norm quite a bit and I have to give Dogfish Head credit for that.

Sampled a few bottles of Red & White over the past month, another unique offering from DFH. Pinot Noir adds sweet/tartness and the woodiness blends well with spices and Wit beer base. Not sure what inspired DFH to brew Red & White, but I give mad props to them!

750 ml bottle. Aroma moerate sweet malt and fermented fruits. Red body with white head that had a tynt of pink. Mild sweet malt caramel presence along with some fruity citrus orange flavors. Full bodied that was easy on the palate. Good sipping brew.

I have to have this one again! Wow! For me the flavor was Very complex, subtle and mellow. There was no one dominating characteristic. I felt like I would appreciate this one a lot more the second time around now that I get it.

Pours a almost clear ruby color with a large, pink head. Aroma of yeast, grapes and oak. Tastes slightly vinious, with some citrus qualities and a bit of funk. Subdued spices. Slightly hot. Medium body. A winner.

Bottle, pours a clear dark red bronze with a few bubbles, sweet aroma with a white beer malt fragrance, raspberry, strawberry and wine aromas, there is a aged tone to the aromas, faint grape skin fragrance, sweet syrup flavor with berries, wheat and citrus flavor, small bite on the tongue, alcohol warmth in the sip, the alcohol does not overwhelm the flavors as it warms which is good, crisp and medium dry on the palate, a tart and sweet mix in the mouth, comes across as more of a fruit beer then a wit beer, the beer is light to drink but not as light as some wit beers I have tried, this was interesting, I would buy this again.
