Commercial Description:
A big, Belgian-style Wit brewed with coriander and orange peel and fermented with Pinot Noir juice. After fermentation a fraction of the batch is aged in Oregon Pinot Noir barrels, and another fraction is aged on oak staves. The beer is blended together before packaging. This has been one of our most popular Limited Edition beers at both our Rehoboth Beach, DE brewpub and at festivals. It successfully marries the refreshing citrusy qualities of a Belgian-style white beer with the robust complexity of a bold red wine.

Bottle. Poured a hazy reddish color with almost a purple hue and an off-white head. Sweet vinous nose with some cherry over-tones and light yeast. Flavor is soft wood with some Chardonnay notes. As it warms some light cherry notes become more present. Sweet finish with a good amount of warming alcohol.

Bottle: pours a hazy, darker orange with a thin white head, citrus and wheat aroma, taste is citrus, a light spice, some of the oak is present, a bit of a fizzy mouthfeel, refreshing is a good descriptor for this.

Once I adjusted to this, it was a nice, compelling beer. You can definitely taste the pinot influence. Very fruity and very alcoholic nose. Commercial description is pretty accurate.

This is one interesting beer, as is the Black and Blue its counterpart. Has a great nose. Hints of orange peel and citrus, definitly on the fruity side. Hits the mounth with a nice little punch, but is not super overpowering.

Has a nice bite a sweet spiciness to it. I liked the harshness of the pinot notes. Definitely very winey. I liked the tastes of fruits in this as they were very unripened red berries. Nice one.

On tap at Cole’s in Buffalo. Light redish ambar colour with very little head. Nice wheaty citrusy aroma. Sweet malty flavour with noticeable citrus fruits, yeast and alcohol flavour. Nice lingering aftertaste.

750 in Chimay glass. Pinkish amber with ring and a little lace and couple floaters. Boozy woody sweet fruity aroma. Toffee fruity orange cough syrupy with bitter spicy bite and woody bitter mouth-coating syrupy finish. Full body. I’m always afraid of the Dogfish crazy ingredient beers. But in the end, they always taste like beer, just not especially pleasing beer.

Sample at the Total Wine Beerfest, Jacksonville FL 04-18-2009. A high proof Wit with some weird flavors from the wine and oak. I didn’t like the flavor profile but others seemed to.
