3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
After a great deal of mixed emotions, Iím sitting down tonight with the Dogfish Head Red and White. I say mixed emotions because there has been very little hype about this beer, yet its very hard to find. Iíve had a few other brews with the grape-juice concept, some have been great (Otter Creek QVH) some have been mediocre.
The Dogfish Red and White starts out as a Wit-style, they then add some pinot noir grape juice, ferment again, and age a small percentage in used pinot noir barrels. So I say again, mixed emotions.
The Red and White pours into my glass almost glowing of reddish/orange/amber color. It is seriously one of the most uniquely colored beers Iíve ever seen. Its not clear, but not really cloudy either. Its dark amber in color, but almost brightly hued (if thatís possible).
The foam is prominent at first, but probably from my vigorous pour. The foam dissipates quickly, leaving a very mild lacing on the glass.
Once I take a sip, Iím very, very intrigued. The Red and White is extremely smooth and drinkable, yet fairly bold and complex. With each smell and sip, Iím getting hints of new layers. For the most part I think its much more "beer-like" than I had expected. Very subtle flavors of pinot noir fruit, but if I were not a wine drinker they may have gone unnoticed.
As the beer warms, more flavors and aromas appear. Hints of orange, maybe red berries, as well as some mild spices like clove and cinnamon. Iím really having a hard time putting my finger on everything thatís going on here.
At the very least I need to have another one of these Red and Whites with company. I think if Matt and I were both sampling we could help each other figure out whatís going on here.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
750 mL bottle. Part of a tasting 11/24/2013 at Fraserís Pub in Ann Arbor. Darker gold pour with minimal filmy head , and essentially no lace. Thereís an immediate dominating aroma of coriander in the nose. There is also a nice zest that comes along with it. I believe itís orange zest. There is a little hint of sour in the tail end of the nose as well. The flavor holds a little bit of spiciness to it. There is a very yeasty taste, pretty common to the Belgian style. The mouth feel is somewhat thin, and the flavors donít linger much at all

An underrated DFH offering. Complex and refreshing, despite its size. Ages well.

This is a delicious beer with just enough sweetness. One of my faves from Dogfish Heads limited editions.

3.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Poured into a trapist glass a orange with red tint pour with white head. Smell of wheat and fruite. A hint of grape. The more and more I drank it the more I liked it. Does not feel like a 10% ALE.

3.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Sample at the Decatur Beer Fest. Pours a clear copper color, with a small, off-white head. The aroma is very vinous (notes of moscato and zinfandel, perhaps?), with a backbone of white bread. The flavor is very sweet. Light to medium body, sharp, crisp, and lightly acidic, with a good, clean finish. Overall, this is a lovely, fruity, and easy-drinking beer.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle into tulip glass. Red-orange color, kind of a tarnished brass. Very wine-like nose, reminiscent of a sour. In the mouth, thereís a bit of high alcohol sweetness (not unusual for Dogfish, I find) but not too out of whack. The grape juice comes through as, well, grape or dry red wine flavor. Finishes slightly sweet and sticky..

I loved this beer, very very smooth with a full mouth feel. A little bit like a red wine but with a nice hop undertone, delicious

3.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
750ml. Bottle. Pours clear orange with a two finger white head that thins slowly leaving nice lacing. Aroma is coriander, orange, fruit, spices and basement aromas. Medium body, lightly sweet, orange peel, spice, yeast, average carbonation, creamy texture. Ending with a yeasty sweet orange finish. Quite nice and balanced.
