Commercial Description:
A big, Belgian-style Wit brewed with coriander and orange peel and fermented with Pinot Noir juice. After fermentation a fraction of the batch is aged in Oregon Pinot Noir barrels, and another fraction is aged on oak staves. The beer is blended together before packaging. This has been one of our most popular Limited Edition beers at both our Rehoboth Beach, DE brewpub and at festivals. It successfully marries the refreshing citrusy qualities of a Belgian-style white beer with the robust complexity of a bold red wine.

Pours a pinkish amber with ruby/violet highlights and a thin pink lasting head. Aroma is sweet tangy grapejuice, light on the oak and vanilla, with hints of perfume, flowers, and sugary sweetness. Fruity flavor dried out by the wood, with oaky and grapeskin tannins, grapejuice flavor (not concord- but red wine grapes), a bit salty, earthy, and a touch of DMS- sea-salt spray quality. Notes of orange peel spice and belgian yeasty phenoilcs from the wit characteristics come through a bit in the end as it warms. Mouthfeel is nice, and appears to be bottle conditioned? Definitely unfiltered as there is a certain sediment in the bottle. At first, on tap at EBF, I didnt like this. Then out of a bottle it seemed very nice even fresh (1 month in the bottle) This might also be nice with some age on it.

Bottle purchased at Mustard Seed Market a few months ago, back when the weather was warm and sunny...Sigh.... those were the days. Now I get to keep myself warm by drinking and having a space heater next to my giblets. Anyhow, this pours a very attractive orange with a thin white head. Aroma is complex, filled with yeast, orange peal, a little earthy oak and just a hint of the grape juice. The flavor does not disappoint. It really comes off with a mix of the lovely Belgian yeast flavors mix with a genuine sweetness, oranges, a tad bit of spice-ginger, almost. I can’t much taste any serious wine notes, instead it tastes more mellowed by the oak aging. Somewhat fluffy in on the tongue, chewy at the end, and boy howdy does it mask the alcohol, like a good beer should.

Draft at BT. Light copper with a sturdy head. Aroma is fruity apricot and peach with spicy Belgian notes. Flavor has a nice ash dryness to it to go with grape and peach. .

The aroma has wheat and coriander. Flavor has grape tastes, white mostly, as well as distinctive wine taste that is just a little dry. There are some spices here. A red beer, and quite sweet. Strange but very nice. A long way from the a standard wit.

Pours a gleaming amber body and a fluffy pinkish head. The aroma is sweet, yeasty, and leans towards resembling saltwater toffee. The flavor, especially as the beer warms, brings out a cotton candy sweetness, cherry juice, brulee plums and pears, mentions of citrus, more of the spicy upfront notes of coriander, some tartness on the finish, not really oak but definitely a vinous wine like character. The beer does seem very refined upfront, but there is a raw and rustic finish that is rather unforgettable. The high abv burn and yeast characteristics are very much in the DFH tradition.
A nice beer overall, my fiancé likes it more than I do, it’s a bit too sweet for my taste… I’ll let a few bottles sit for a couple years and revisit one every year upon Red & White’s anniversary and observe how the beer has changed.

750ml Bottle. Pours out a dark red color with a white head that disappears pretty quick. The actual concept of this beer is really interesting (based on the label). Smells full of fruits and spices. Not much oak or wine detected in the smell. Perhaps some cherry smells? Taste is smooth and kind of wine like (from the pinot), but there is no note of oak or anything as you would think based on the description. Really a unique beer, that proves this brewery is never afraid to go against the norm. I was pretty impressed with this one, just wish it was less than 15 dollars a bottle.

Ah...A wit, now I know why this was different than I expected. I thought something along the lines of the black and blue, but this was lighter in color and different. Another great beer from one of the greatest. One downside, as always, is the price.
