Commercial Description:
A big, Belgian-style Wit brewed with coriander and orange peel and fermented with Pinot Noir juice. After fermentation a fraction of the batch is aged in Oregon Pinot Noir barrels, and another fraction is aged on oak staves. The beer is blended together before packaging. This has been one of our most popular Limited Edition beers at both our Rehoboth Beach, DE brewpub and at festivals. It successfully marries the refreshing citrusy qualities of a Belgian-style white beer with the robust complexity of a bold red wine.

Mini growler from Half-Time. Pours a cloudy opaque ruby brown with a small white head that vanishes quickly. I would assume most of the cloudiness is my own doing, as even with just one day sitting, a good bit of sediment had begun to settle out, and I wasn’t about to let that stuff not get mixed back in. Red wine, sugar cane, cherries, and baking bread on the nose. Medium thick body, with very little carbonation. Starts sweet and ends with flavors of candied bananas and port, full of stone fruits. The ABV on here peeks through in a couple of places, mostly afterwards as a nice warming sensation. Pretty interesting brew.

Pretty bright red. Fruity, smells of pomegranate, grape juice, and coriander. Sugary but not sweet, very dry at the end. Somewhat harsh. Could use some more fruit character in the flavor.

(Bottle a friend brought from the East Coast last year). At first didn’t pour much of a head till I poured straight down the middle of the glass. Then the head formed, but fell fairly quickly. Body color is orange with a hint of red to it. Good Belgian Strong aroma with ever so slight hint of the pinot. Clear body from sitting in my fridge all these months. Light oakiness from the barrels present. Body is thicker than average. Corriander lingers on the pallate. Warming in the throat. Not much sludge at the bottom of the bottle.

Ok, I get the Red and White now. Light puce amber color with a moderate off pink head. Fairly stable couple of centimeters of foam forming a lid. with light ring a lace in the wake of each sip. Floral soap aromas with hints of coriander. As it sets some fresh berry scent come out. A dichotomy of scents, there are some that I enjoy, with hints of wheat and spice; and then some seem to remind me of a cheap berry wine. While not present in the aroma, the strength does come out after a few quaffs with a mild flame and spice in the finish. Start does have a light sweet wheat and spice quality, quite typical of a wit. The middle kicks in and suddenly there is a burst of grapes and berries, there is even a light malt liquor quality (that corn/grain sweetness presence). Finish as stated prior has a certain spiciness and bitterness. Yes, orange rinds do seem to be in the forefront. LInger is rather dry with a gentle return to some malt and wheat. It’s odd, I shared my first bottle of this with some friend the other night and without thinking about rating, thought higher of this one. Perhaps my rating should be higher, or perhaps lower, as I maybe tempering this rating with my prior thought. Hell I don’t know. Either way, I enjoyed the experience. I think I thought about this one too much.

750ml Bottle: Aroma is lightly sweet. Smells vinous with notes of spices, oak, cherries, and cloves. Poured a pinkish amber color with a medium, rocky, light pink head that lasted throughout. Good lacing. Clear. Sparkling. Flavor is medium sweet and lightly bitter and tart. Tastes of cherries, Cabernet, coriander, clove, citrus, and a little yeast. Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long, sweet, vinous finish.

Pours a clear red except for the fine particulate. The spicing comes through first almost like a maltier witbier, but upon closer notice the winey aspects of the pinot noir comes out especially in a light tartness. Interesting in concept but not really all that bizarre in taste.
