4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: APR 12, 2014 A true original, almost reminiscent of a Belgian quad with a bit of a kriek flavor, and some red wine as well. The oak-aging mellows the beer quite a bit, masking the 10% ABV. The appearance couldn’t be better: amber colored with a dense, white head that sticks around for an impressive amount of time. Not as dark in color as I expected. The flavor is decadent: orange peel, plums, red wine, apricots, cherries, and just a hint of belgian yeast. The palate is so rich that you can almost take a bite out of it. Incredible.

Transfer from BA review on 8-6-12 -
Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass
Appearance – Served a hazy golden color with a slight reddish tinge and a one finger white head. The head faded relatively fast and left some nice lacing on the glass.
Smell – The smell is heaviest of yeast and a wine like grape aroma. Mixed with these, are smells of a citrus and dark fruit nature. Overall it is quite pleasant.
Taste – A sweet dark fruit flavor meets the tongue. The dark fruits are heaviest of cherry but contain lighter notes of prune as well. These dark fruit flavors are also mixed with a good presence of a grape flavor which combined to give this beer a wine like tasting body. While wine like, as the taste advances beyond the initial taste, yeast flavors as well as a light citrus flavor come to the tongue. Toward the end the alcohol makes its presence known and leaves a satisfying warming taste in the mouth.
Mouthfeel – For 10 % abv. the body is actually a little on the lighter side (although heavy in comparison to the average brew) and the carbonation level is on the higher side. Both the “lighter” body and higher carbonation are very fitting for the fruit and wine like characteristics of the brew and make it quite easy drinking even at 10 %.
Overall – I am usually not a fan of a beer that has wine like characteristics, but this one was quite enjoyable.

3.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 20/20
Not as impressive as I was hoping, but still good. Dogfish never disappoints. Sweet rate at first...lingers lightly there after. The oak is apparent but the point noir taste is a little harder to find. Overall, a good brew ....not an all nighter though.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Murky amber with reddish hues. Nose of Belgian yeast, orange, and red grape. Flavor is light red grape and yeast with some citrus orange and spice. Lingering yeast and grape. A bit hot and slightly muddied flavor. An imperial wit with grapes.

Fizzy in appearance. Head large but shrinks fast. A mix of flavors without a sense of priority. Ok but confusing .Alcohol flavor is present.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Malty and tart come from this cloudy reddish brew with an offwhite head of medium bubbles. The full bodied brew is sweet with a hint of tartness and a bit of that alcohol burn. There is a woody flavor. Not bad worth a try

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
It has a deep and hazy orange amber colored body with little bits of yeast floating around in it. There is an off white head on top which fades quickly making some slick lacing at the top of the glass before it goes. The aroma is strong, fruity, estery and yeasty. I get notes of white grapes, hints of oak, wine like alcohol and hints of something medicinal/phenolic. This has a big body for a Witt and tons of interesting complexity. It has a sweet alcoholic warmth from start to finish which slows down drinkability and reminds you that this is a big beer. Up front I get the fruity notes, the yeast, the spice and some oak. Notes of white grape and citrus orange peel stand out with lighter notes of pineapple, sliced almond and sweet grain all moving in and out with each sip. The finish has some herbal hop notes and bitterness moving in but it remains somewhat sweet and boozy.

Spice, sour fruit, yeast. Pours cloudy honey gold with bright white foamy head that fades quickly leaving a fair amount of lacing. Medium bodied. Candy sweet juxtaposed with a fruit sourness. Citrus, spice, wine, oak. A nice dry red wine finish with a little warming in the throat.
