Commercial Description:
Surrender Monkey is a Scottish-style Ale brewed by staff senior brewer Brian Connery. The beer is brewed with four traditional Gruit spices; yarrow, mugwort, meadowsweet and camomile. The spices are steeped separately and the tea is then added to the beer pre-fermentation. Surrender Monkey is malty with a flowery nose displaying hints of honey and green apple. Brian fermented the beer with our propietary Dogfish yeast. He chose this style to give a shout-out to his own Scottish heritage and named the beer in honor of Groundskeeper Willie of "The Simpsons"

On tap at Rehoboth Brewpub 03/22/08. Pint was a dense ruby color with no head. Aroma was faint with scents of malt and camomile? Flavor up front was mildly herbal, but with an odd medicinal twist to it. Mouthfeel was really thin and this contributed a watery property to the beer. Finish was sweet and fairly simple. Strange to say, but I found this beer to be eerily reminiscent of Newcastle. Somehow I don’t think this beer will ever make it into full production.

On tap at the brew pub in DE: Dark red color, small head.. Not much aroma. Flavor was cinnamon and malt. Cinnamon was the dominant flavor! It wasnt bad just not good as every one else said. Medium texture. To be honest I would NOT get it again... But cheers to DFH/Brian head brewer for trying something different!

On Tap-@ Rehoboth Brewpub. Pours an amber/copper color w/a slight foamy head. It went downhill quickly from here. Had a very slight malt aroma & a weak, watery, medininal flavor to it. Although they were calling it a Scottish Ale, it had none of the malt bite or bitterness one would associate with this style; it did have a little bit of an iced tea taste to it, but I’ve had iced tea’s which were stronger. This beer was just too weak & had no body to it. They weren’t pushing it as a light or low alcohol, but the low ABV is certainly hurting the taste of this brew; it’s just not very good & thats not something I often have to say @ a DFH brew. I knew it was a bad sign when I ordered it & the bartender said "let me GIVE you a sample of it first & you can see how you like it". I’ve NEVER had that happen before @ DFH. This was one of their Brewpub specials & I don’t think it’s gonna make it to the bottling plant. I guess they can’t all be winners, especially when you do as many off the wall things as these guys do. I won’t hold it against them though!
