Commercial Description:
This beer is based on chemical analysis of pottery fragments found in Honduras which revealed the earliest known alcoholic chocolate drink used by early civilization to toast special occasions. the discovery of this beverage pushed back the earliest use of cocoa for human consumption more than 500 years to 1200 BC. As per the analysis, Dogfish head’s Theobroma (food of the gods) is brewed with Aztec cocoa powder and cocoa nibs, honey, chilies, and annatto (fragrant tree seeds). Theobroma is 9% ABV and will be available in Champagne bottles by late spring 2008.

Have couple bottles of this and had it one tap at the RB brewpub when it was just a test batch. I love the beers they make like this it has a very cool back story. It’s a murky reddish brown color with a white head that dissipates very quickly. Aroma is of spices and chocolate the taste is heavy of caramel chocolate and you get the hops to finish the whole thing off. it’s a dry bitter finish.

Bottled. A hazy amber beer with a thin off-white head. The aroma is sweet with notes of hops and spices. The flavor is sweet and spice - lavender being in the mix, combined with light notes of caramel, leading to a dry and slightly bitter finish. The alcohol leaves a slight burn in the mouth. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

Sampled during Deliriumfest’s Graduation tasting in Maplewood, MN and shared by Deliriumfest. From a 750 ml bottle pours a semi-hazy golden copper brew with a fast dissolving white head that leaves behind a spotty lacing. Aroma of honey, sweet apples, some alcohol, and chocolate. Taste is thick, full bodied, smooth, creamy and flavors of caramel, chocolate and flowery hops. Finish is semi-sweet with an aftertaste of mead (honey), caramel, and a hint of flowery hops.

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of TheCheeseMan. Hazy amber golden with tiny, floating impurities and an off-white head. Sweetish caramel and flowers in the nose. Rather full-bodied, low in carbonation, sweet malts, fruit, honey and pollen. No bitterness. 290509

750ml bottle from Bob McFarlands in Wisconsin. Purchased this back in 01/09. Pours a slightly murky copper with a big light-tan head. Nose is sweet and spicy, overall totally strange nose, but good. Taste is a little more spiced, with a candy like tootsie roll taste to it at the end. Somewhat easy on the mouthfeel with the spice and chocolate. A rare taste to this but not that good. This was hard to finish by myself.

Blind tasting at Papsø’s
Hazy light amber color. The aroma is light, with some vegetables and cereals. It has a very ordinary flavor, with sweetish malt, light alcohol, and an impression of coffee grounds (dusty); it ends quite sweet. Very strange.
