3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
pours a cloudy yellow with medium head. aromas of spice, alcohol and bread. taste is strong alcohol, mixed with chocolate and fruit. finishes with heat due to combination of alcohol and the chillies which don’t seem to appear until passing the throat. With this mixture of strange ingredients, I really expected something very unique, but really comes down to a typical unbalanced Belgian triple with an extra "burn" at the end.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
750 served in a tulip glass
Appearance - hazy gold with a light white head.
Aroma - light chili and chocolate with some herbal notes
Taste - honey. More chocolate and chile. I'm still getting that strange herbal note. My guess is that it's the annatto.
Mouthfeel - medium body with tingly carbonation. Strangely refreshing.
Overall - definitely one of the better pepper beers I've had. The ancho is subtle and it plays very well with the chocolate and honey. I expected this beer to be darker, but I'm glad it's not. I think the specialty elements would've gotten muddled up with too much malt.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle from April 2013. Pours a full bodied orange, similar in appearance to a DIPA. Musty with cocoa powder and a saffron/hibiscus-like indistinguishable aroma. Unbelievably unique and complex. Smooth mouthfeel at first with hints of cocoa nibs, caramel malts and honey. Finishes clean with a pleasant zing from the chilis. Alcohol content virtually undetectable. Chili heat creeps up to the tip of the tongue with additional sips. Interesting to say the least. If you have an adventurous palate definitely seek it out.

Pours orange amber and almost clear with a quickly vanishing head. I picked up a little cocoa on the aroma. Cocoa and a trace of chiles dominated the flavor. Not bad tasting, alcohol was well disguised, but I was expecting something with a little more substance and flavor.

3/27/14. Bomber. Hand it to Dogfish to create a beer that is very hard to line up against standard styles. Pours with a frothy head that quickly dissipates. Light spicy nose with no hint of hops in nose or mouth. Tastes almost like a spicy cider. A bit of chili burn and just a hint of coca.

Hazy orange pour with a thin, white head. Decent mixture of cocoa and spice in the nose but not pungent. Rather interesting flavors mixed in this one. Cocoa is definitely floating in there but its definitely an odd concoction. Definitely some spices bouncing around and some faint sweetness as well. At 9% I would have pegged this for something between 5-6% so the alcohol is hidden quite well aside from the belly burn. Solid offering but also a bit of a novelty brew.

From a bomber. Solid, though more interesting than delicious. Slight burn. Not too boozy.

750 ml bottle. Bottled in 2012, yep a tad old. Orange color with any head. Aroma is cocoa powder, chili peppers and honey. The flavor upfront with honey and chocolate with a grainy body. The pepper still is pretty strong in the finish causing the texture to end dry. Lighter body and light carbonation. The 9 % is hidden under the chocolate and chili but the flavor overall is rather weak. If the ancient Mayan’s really had this as their beer I feel sorry for them. Is this a novelty beer? Yes, it sure is.

Pours clear gold with a fizzy, peach-tinted head. Aroma of cocoa, bread and honey. Taste is malty with cocoa and indistinct herbs. Faint chili in the finish. Very interesting.

Shared at Ajen’s Farewell. I was expecting a dark beer but it poured a surprisingly clear light copper color with a nice white foamy head. Cocoa, mead/honey aroma. The taste is cocoa, honey and light chilly very subtle with no real heat. Very nice. Much less chocolatey than I expected but good.
