COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer is based on chemical analysis of pottery fragments found in Honduras which revealed the earliest known alcoholic chocolate drink used by early civilization to toast special occasions. the discovery of this beverage pushed back the earliest use of cocoa for human consumption more than 500 years to 1200 BC. As per the analysis, Dogfish head’s Theobroma (food of the gods) is brewed with Aztec cocoa powder and cocoa nibs, honey, chilies, and annatto (fragrant tree seeds). Theobroma is 9% ABV and will be available in Champagne bottles by late spring 2008.

Clear copper colored. Nice white head, decent lace. Big sweet nose with honey, some nutmeg, chocolate and others. Medium bodied, honey, cocoa, pepper spiceness catches the palate and back of throat, actually helps balance a bit. Gets a bit syupy as it warms. Its pretty decent. Tough to rate but unique, interesting and above all else, I think thats what they were shooting for. Good job. Sadly, not really worth $13 a 750ml.

Pours a deep dark amberfluffy head. Aromas of dark fruits, tobacco, chocolate, and some spicy pepper. Creamy mouthfeel of vanilla with pepper notes...finishes astringent chocolate.

This beer is very different from what I thought it would be. The aroma is very peach heavy with bread and green apple. Taste is peach, honey, cocoa, green apples, then chilies and bread in the finish. After the beer has warmed up there is a more pronounced cocoa presence in the aroma and back of the tongue.

Marked as Bottled in 2008. The aroma is stale, woody. Pours a cloudy copper/orange with small white head fully diminishing and no lacing. The taste is a light bitter. The body is medium the texture is creamy a little thin, the carbonation soft and the finish a short bitter. I really liked this beer before, so obviously it has been aged too long.

Bottle share at Evernote in Redwood City, CA. Aroma is honey, concentrated apple juice, mild hot cocoa. Taste is kinda herbal with some spicy / peppery bits but actually had some mild Belgian yeast spice qualities to me. More interesting in aroma than taste.

Deep , amber color ; big , white head which quickly disappeared. Strange aroma of cocoa , honey , spices and malt. it was a case where my nose and eyes didn't agree )) , because my nose expected something dark . Cocoa and honey in taste , with distinguished chillies notes . Dry finish , and some pinching in mouth (obviously chili pepper ). Unusual and interesting.

On tap at the brewpub. It’s an unclear, orange-colored beer topped by a minimal sized white head. Spices, a light funk, fruityness and some dried apricots in the aroma. Some alcohol notes in the far back. It’s full-bodied, lightly warming and with a nice carbonation level. Rather dry. Nice bitterness in the flavor, which else consits of the same fruityness and funk as in the aroma. And the spices, that lasts a good while. Not really fond of them, it’s a quite strange combo. Still, it’s a nice beer. 150621

Pours orange with a small white head. Aroma is carob and light molasses. Taste is molasses first the something like carob & malts. Agreeable but not awesome.

Growler from the likka store. Poured into snifter. Moderately hazy orange color, small white head. Nose is cocoa and sweet malt with a light vegetal thing, like green pepper, some black pepper as well. Taste is cocoa and honey with a light bitterness. Slightly buttery. Low carbonation. Overall just kind of meh.

Draught @ Dogfish Head Brewing & Eats, Rehoboth Beach, DE
Pours hazy cloudy deep golden with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, dried fruits and alcohol. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter with a long malty, fruity and a faint hint of chili. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.
