This beer is based on chemical analysis of pottery fragments found in Honduras which revealed the earliest known alcoholic chocolate drink used by early civilization to toast special occasions. the discovery of this beverage pushed back the earliest use of cocoa for human consumption more than 500 years to 1200 BC. As per the analysis, Dogfish head’s Theobroma (food of the gods) is brewed with Aztec cocoa powder and cocoa nibs, honey, chilies, and annatto (fragrant tree seeds). Theobroma is 9% ABV and will be available in Champagne bottles by late spring 2008.

Bottled. A hazy amber beer with a thin off-white head. The aroma is sweet with notes of hops and spices. The flavor is sweet and spice - lavender being in the mix, combined with light notes of caramel, leading to a dry and slightly bitter finish. The alcohol leaves a slight burn in the mouth. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

Bottled. Amber colour, small head. Aroma is toffee, as well as some sweet maltyness as well as mild chocolate and mild bitterness. Flavour is toffee, some honey, mild berries and some mild wooden notes. Also some mild chocolaty notes. Balanced, but actually quite thin palate for being 9 %.

8th November 2008. Cloudy amber beer. Soft creamy malt. Subtle chocolate tone that becomes more obvious towards the finish. Something sweet and aromatic going on (annato?) The chillis are a warming prescense during the late finish but not overdone at all. Typical Dogfish beer really - that is to say unlike anything I’ve tasted before!

Unique. On draught at Birreria Paradiso. No aroma. Light body, taste of bittersweet chocolate, with a malty finish. The chillies come in at the very end. Fascinating.

Blind tasting at Papsø’s
Hazy light amber color. The aroma is light, with some vegetables and cereals. It has a very ordinary flavor, with sweetish malt, light alcohol, and an impression of coffee grounds (dusty); it ends quite sweet. Very strange.
