COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer is based on chemical analysis of pottery fragments found in Honduras which revealed the earliest known alcoholic chocolate drink used by early civilization to toast special occasions. the discovery of this beverage pushed back the earliest use of cocoa for human consumption more than 500 years to 1200 BC. As per the analysis, Dogfish head’s Theobroma (food of the gods) is brewed with Aztec cocoa powder and cocoa nibs, honey, chilies, and annatto (fragrant tree seeds). Theobroma is 9% ABV and will be available in Champagne bottles by late spring 2008.

Draft->snifter at FC location. Orange/gold color with slight head. Sour, yeasty aroma. Taste is sweet yet spicy. Thin and faint. Just goes downhill.

Pours a hazy yellow with a quick-fading white foam head. Aroma is largely honey and a bite of alcohol. Taste is dominated by honey, with traces of cocoa, fruit, and some chili heat, which provides a touch of bitterness as well. Has a large combination of flavors, but unfortunately they all come off a bit too subtle.

Drank out of a pint. I can not put my finger on the aromas. Nice golden brown color, a white lacey head. Delicious, usually not a fan of Dogfish Head’s brews. But this beer is amazing, I was hoping for little more chile flavor.

deep amber color. Very thin head. Malty nose with lots of cacao, chillis and hints of marmalade. Very low carbonation and this beer has integrated well over five years. Slightly sweet, oranges and chocolate dominate mouth but well rounded and slight hint of pepper. Warming cacao and chilli finish. Very nice and aged well. Nice

Transfer from BA review on 10-17-12- Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass Appearance – Served a golden amber colored brew with a small white head. The head faded fast to give only a lighter amount of lacing. Smell – The aroma was bready with some notes of a yeasty smell. With the strong bread aroma were notes of chili and a bit of honey. While it is a cocoa brewed beer, I did not detect much in the nose at all. While not much cocoa, it was a nice aroma none the less Taste – The bready flavor with some sweeter fruit and honey flavors start out in the taste. A lighter cocoa and yeasty taste come quickly to the taste, but never grow very strong. The bready flavor remains relatively constant throughout, but the cocoa and fruit start to fade more toward the end when some chili spiciness as well as a lighter herbal tastes come to the tongue. In the end a dry and spicy crisp flavor are left to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer was on the just above average side in terms of creaminess with a carbonation level that was just below average. The light enhancement of creaminess was nice for the lighter cocoa, chili and honey flavors but not too heavy to take away from the great drinkability that the slightly lower then average carbonation level provides. Overall – This was a very tasty beer with nice flavor transitions a great flavor profile and a good easy drinking feel. Well worth a try.

Hazy orange color with essentially no head. A little lacking in the aroma department. Some sweetness on the palate with a slightly spicy combination of flavors from the chilies I assume. This is an interesting concept for a beer but it fell a little short in the execution for me.

Poured a cloudy hazy orange gold color with very little head. But it more than makes up for it in taste. Such a smooth tasting beer. The aroma is amazing. As it warms u get a great scent of honey. Dogfish has hit a homerun with this beauty.

Light hay nose, some herbs mixed in there. Lovely organy color with a low scumy head. Complex tastes in the middle with a sweet honey base supporting it all: cocoa, vanilla, spices, pepper. Leaves a light coating on the lips like a lollipop. Fully body, and well balanced but not a beer for everyone. It definitely stands well on its own -- a good sipping beer.

Cloudy light orange amber color loaded with sediments. Medium foamy head. Very light hay, herbal nose. Light cocoa, red pepper, caramel taste with little spicy aftertaste. Interesting. Mellow light alcohol taste.

Unclear burnt orange amber. Fizzy dissipating white head. Aroma is malty, honey, chilies, some spice. Interesting flavor. Chilies are definitely a key player. Mild spice. Some overripe fruitiness. Some alcohol there but nothing to indicate the 9%. Lighter medium body. Really unique. A Ponderous recreation.
