2.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
NOT A Fan. I love Dogfish Head but this beer is just not my style. It pours a nice amber with a small beige cap. The aroma is a pungent malt aroma. Flavor is very strange. Ancho chilies, cacao nibs... It fits the description... However, the taste is awful. Maybe just not for me? I would pass. It's an expensive gamble.

From a bomber. Solid, though more interesting than delicious. Slight burn. Not too boozy.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
750 ml bottle. Bottled in 2012, yep a tad old. Orange color with any head. Aroma is cocoa powder, chili peppers and honey. The flavor upfront with honey and chocolate with a grainy body. The pepper still is pretty strong in the finish causing the texture to end dry. Lighter body and light carbonation. The 9 % is hidden under the chocolate and chili but the flavor overall is rather weak. If the ancient Mayan’s really had this as their beer I feel sorry for them. Is this a novelty beer? Yes, it sure is.

Pours clear gold with a fizzy, peach-tinted head. Aroma of cocoa, bread and honey. Taste is malty with cocoa and indistinct herbs. Faint chili in the finish. Very interesting.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Shared at Ajen’s Farewell. I was expecting a dark beer but it poured a surprisingly clear light copper color with a nice white foamy head. Cocoa, mead/honey aroma. The taste is cocoa, honey and light chilly very subtle with no real heat. Very nice. Much less chocolatey than I expected but good.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
750ml bottle into a shaker glass; served cool.
Aroma: Odd. Very, very odd. I have never smelled anything like this before. Actually, it does remind me of how Rogue’s 19 Colonies Mead smells, so I’m going to assume that the aroma is mostly honey, and the unknown remainder is the annatto.
Appearance: Hazy, orange sun-burst colored body, with a slowly dissipating, white head. High amount of visible carbonation. Low amount of lacing.
Taste: Definitely some honey and annatto going on here too. Just a low, subtle cocoa note throughout. The flavors are smooth, gentle, and blend into each other well. I do feel an extremely mild spice tingle on my gums.
Palate: Medium bodied. Supple. Low carbonation. Moderate length on the finish.
Overall: Not what I expected at all! Gentle, well-rounded, and delicious. Smooth as butter.

Bottle @ Maxi. Clear orange, small white head, some lacing. Aroma, lots of honey, flowers, perfume, malty, spices. Taste, malty, honey, spicy, some cocoa, fruity. Some chilie in the aftertaste. Quite carbonated. Interesting beer, but probably wouldn’t buy again.

Tap at Lazy Dog. Pours a light gold with a very thin layer of cream colored head. Aroma of sugar and sweetness. Taste of sugar and alcohol. Not one of my favorites.

4.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
A: It pours golden, with a slight haze, hundreds of tiny bubbles quickly ascend to the medium-thick head which quickly faded.
S: A wonderful scent was given off by this beer, honey, cocoa, bread and a slight hint of the 9% alcohol presented itself to me at the end.
T: crisp and clean malt, subtle cocoa with a little bit of alcohol. So complex and yet delicate and light, one of the most thought-provoking and wondrous beers I’ve tried.
O: This beer is stellar in my opinion, everything, the history, the taste, the way it looks in the glass as you pour it, even down to the label fuels my senses and I am always disappointed when my bottle is empty. Some people have made mention of the lack of hops flavor or smell… well, it doesn’t because it’s not supposed to. I’ve had this one many times and often selfishly kept it to myself not allowing others to try but yet I don’t have it often. Those whom I have introduced it to have loved it as well. Excellent beer and a must try.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
750 ml bottle into signature tulip glass, bottled on 4/29/2013. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy golden amber color with a 1 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of honey, toast, bread, cracker, orange, pear, apple, grape, nuttiness, herbal, floral, chile pepper, light cocoa, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt, yeast, and spice flavors; with good strength. Taste of honey, bread, cracker, orange, pear, apple, grape, toast, nuttiness, herbal, floral, light cocoa/chile pepper, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Light chile pepper heat on the finish; with lingering notes of honey, bread, cracker, pear, apple, grape, orange, herbal, floral, light nuttiness, light cocoa/chile pepper, and herbal/yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice balance and complexity of malt, spice, and yeast ester flavors; with zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a moderately slick/creamy mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice ancient ale style. All around nice balance of malt, spice, and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV, A very enjoyable offering.
