Commercial Description:
This beer is based on chemical analysis of pottery fragments found in Honduras which revealed the earliest known alcoholic chocolate drink used by early civilization to toast special occasions. the discovery of this beverage pushed back the earliest use of cocoa for human consumption more than 500 years to 1200 BC. As per the analysis, Dogfish head’s Theobroma (food of the gods) is brewed with Aztec cocoa powder and cocoa nibs, honey, chilies, and annatto (fragrant tree seeds). Theobroma is 9% ABV and will be available in Champagne bottles by late spring 2008.

Thin head with good carbonation. Sweet honey like aroma with some fruity white grape, spices, a hint of cocoa and an aroma that I am familiar with but just can’t place at the moment. Appearance is a hazy dirty orange. Slighty flat in the mouth and quite sweet. More honey and grapes and cocoa. Light alcohol presence and warming and a pretty smooth and light to medium bodied palate. Some spices late swallow and maybe a bit of heat from the chili peppers. Finishes clean and sweet. As usual, Dogfish Head comes up with the wacky, off-the-wall brews. This one is not too bad though.

Poured a slightly hazy golden color with a thin white head. Aroma is spicy, I can definitely smell a little chili, but I’m getting no chocolate at all. Mainly honey. Flavor is mostly sweet from the honey, again, no chocolate. Pretty disappointing after reading the label.

Thanks to thirdeye11 for sharing this bottle. Pours golden orange with a small white head. Aroma is lots of fruit, but not the chocolate I was expecting. The taste is also mainly fruit with mango and pear. Maybe a little cocoa, but not very much if any at all. Finishes very dry.

Thin, cloudy orange appearance. Fine white, stout-like head. Aroma of spices and chiles. Flavor lightly sweet, incredibly pleasant, of light chile and hints of cacao. Very fun and tasty! Quick, clean, uniquely flavored finish. Definitely worth the try and easy to drink 750ml on your own on a relaxing evening while snowed in.

Can smell the chile spice, nice appearance. This has a good flavor. Don’t notice the cocoa much, but the chile is very evident. Flavor is sweet but not heavy. Pretty tasty.

Bottle. Brown pour with vigorous tan head. Slight cocoa, spices and etoh flavor, definitely a DFH concoction. Chilies don’t make it, IMO.

Tap at Sheffield’s. Red / gold pour. White clingy head. Sweet nose, maybe raisin. Taste is malt, dark fruit, sweet floral.
