COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Tweason’ale is a beer we brewed on the cusp of summer. It is a gluten-free sorghum based beer brewed with fresh strawberries from our friends at Fifer Orchards near Dover, Delaware. For the sorghum, we sourced a dark, sweet, syrup with notes of molasses and pit-fruit. We also used a a dark buckwheat honey with a beautiful hay-like, earthy-malty thing that we felt added the final touch to this Tweason’ale recipe.

Poured into a lager glass from a 12 ounce bottle dated 1-30-2012.

A: Crystal clear amber with a foamy white head that reminds me of a bubble bath, which is (unsurprisingly) not appealing in a beer.

S: A really odd artificial smelling sweetness of syrup with light strawberry notes. It’s really off-putting.

T: This reminds me of a wine cooler with aspartame in it. The artificial tasting syrup flavor leads to a strawberry flavor and a fake sugar finish. I just do not enjoy this, it tastes off.

M: Light and crisp on the tongue with lively carbonation.

O: Save this for the people that need a gluten free beer, this is something I am not enjoying.

This was the first beer that I was actually nervous about buying at a store. I waited to try it. I got the chance this past weekend at Dogfish’s pub in Rehoboth, and now I know why I was so hesitant to actually purchase it. I hate to tank to DFH like this, but I’m glad I didn’t spend the money on buying either a sixer or a full case on this beer. I would have been very disappointed. On one positive, I applaud Dogfish’s effort to produce a gluten-free beer, but I think you may need gluten to brew a good beer. The Tweason’ale poured a light amber color with virtually no head. The body seemed overly carbonated. The nose features some hops and berries, as does the body of flavors. I got a bit of a spicy note toward the back-end of the flavors, as well. But this just isn’t a beer I would enjoy on a regular basis.

Deep golden color out of the bottle with a short lived white head. Odd nose of strawberries and Play-Doh. Strawberry flavor with some maple, brown sugar, clay, and something vaguely chemical. It leaves an odd film on the tongue. Light body with some chewable children vitamins in the finish. This is an odd beer, and if you like strawberries you may like this.

SBWF 2012. Golden beer with a small offwhite head. Sweet honey aroma, caramel, sugary, fruity, some toffee. Honey flavor, fruity, some caramel. Rather boring.

Very tart with an emphasis on the strawberry. It is a weak palate, and off taste due to the sogrum. Taste really well despite its non conformist methods

On tap: The aroma consists of light strawberry, grass, and a hint of lemon... It’s a transparent amber with a small white head that quickly fades to a thin film. The flavor starts with a quick dose of strawberry and apple. The finish has light lemon, grass, and a hint of sorghum. It’s light-medium bodied with mild carbonation. Overall, it does the best job of hiding the sorghum flavor compared to any other gluten free beer I’ve had, but it’s still there...and I really dislike it.

Bottle from Total Wine, Sacramento. Pours clear copper with a thin off-white head and a fruity aroma. There is a watery slightly sour pale malt flavor with a bland finish.

Bottle. Airy nose of artificial strawberry flavoring (funny, I know!), berry and malt with a little earth. Orange body with a pinkish hue when viewed from above and a fizzy off-white head. Crisp medium body with a little sort of burn, gummy fruit, somewhat tart up front and opening to reveal gentle woodiness. Mild champagne fizz and some attendant taste. One of the rare ones (or perhaps the norm for wild experiments) where I have no idea what to make of it, and perhaps more importantly, wonder if they actually run small pilot batches before ramping up for a large batch.

Bottle @ Really late Summer Tasting Ulfborg, 2012. Pours clear golden with bubbles on top. Butter, berries, hoeney and spices. Extreme. Warmth from alcohol. Shit!
