12 oz bottle shared with a group of 4 acquired from Wilmer Liquors (New Lenox, IL). 2008 vintage. Pours a near black pour, opaque brown around the edges with decent light brown milky head, dies to a small layer, laces well. Aromas are oatmeal, roasted malts, a decent coffee layer, fairly sweet overall. Initial is thick, full, and syrupy, throwing out some roasted malt, but lighter, heavy dark fruits, light chocolate, heavy sweetness and body, oatmeal cookies, chocolate comes in heavier, bit creamy and caramel, bit heavy on the booze but it sinks into the norm. Finishes bitter, a nice finish with sweetness and roast. Kind of a shocker overall, extreme, but a very good beer. Glad I got to split this 4 ways. Cheers. WVHouseofBeer (246), Morgantown, West Virginia, USA Jun 30, 2009 2008 bottle. Pours pitch black with a very small amount of quickly disappearing light tan head. Sweet smells of chocolate, malt, and alcohol. Pretty decent medium/heavy body, but could have been a little thicker. Excellent sweet taste, consisting of chocolate, and malt. The alcohol taste is almost nonexistent, which is pretty impressive considering it is 18% ABV. Overall this is an excellent imperial stout and one of my favorite beers from Dogfish Head, although I will probably not get another bottle unless I can find it for less than $8.00/single 12 oz bottle that I paid. cprochak (161), , Washington, USA Jun 25, 2009 2008 Bottle from Bottleworks. Tasted blind as 1 of 15. Pours a jet black with tan head. Aroma of dark sugar, raisin and chocolate. Sweet with touch of sour and soy. Complex teriyak flavor that is unique. A bit harsh and lively on the tongue. I’d love to let this mellow for a few years. rilbert008 (5), new London, Connecticut, USA does not count Jun 23, 2009 one of the best stouts i have had . stygian blackness with miniscule head , thick sweet caramelly aroma , chewy evolution of taste to three different stages .pleasure to sip in duvel glass . not for the faiint of heart or the biased .truly awesome Hank1980 (639), Athens, Georgia, USA Jun 22, 2009 Bottle shared, 2006(?). Poured black with small white head. Aroma of heavy sweet malt, booze, fruit. Taste is really syrupy, with a ton of malt sweetness, fruit, and some alcohol. Finishes very warm and mouth is sticky. Overall, a great beer that is one of a kind. Should definitely improve with some age. Oscbert (467), Sacramento, California, USA Jun 19, 2009 Thanks to Gypsy19 for sharing!
~Pours pitch black with thin white head.
~Banana aroma with sweet malt and alcohol.
~Almost too sweet in flavor. Rasberry fruit and darker fruits like prune and rasisin. Malts, very sweet.
~Medium feel, sickly sweet finish.
~A little too much for me. Hard to even call it beer. This is something you would drink after your dog dies to ease the suffering. hoppopotamus (156), New York, New York, USA Jun 16, 2009 Pours very very dark (although not as black as some imperial stouts I’ve seen) with a very minimal brown head. Aroma is boozy, sweet vanilla, coffee, roasty. Flavor is molasses, chocolate, dark dried fruit like plum and fig, some vinegar/ soy sauce sourness as well. Ridiculously chewy/syrupy mouthfeel, just sticks to your mouth. A great beer, but not as good as some other heavy IS’s I’ve had like goose island’s bourbon county. l1br4r14n (174), Washington, Washington DC, USA Jun 15, 2009 Updated: Jun 23, 2009Big aroma of rich, dark chocolate; prunes, raisins, malt, and a little alcohol. Pours black with a tan head that quickly disappears. Rich, complex flavor! Syrupy dark chocolate, sweet malt, prunes, raisins, and nice warming alcohol. Amazing!
2005 bottle on 6/2009. Flavors are mostly the same as before (delicious!) the only real change is the complete absence of alcohol in the flavor. Didn’t expect that to happen so soon!
