kopher (291), New York, USA Jan 24, 2009 pours a dark brown, topped with thin fizzy tan bubbles
aroma is rum-raisin, cocoa, green apple, and cloying sweetness
flavor is fairly alcoholic, but bursting with every sort of sweet treat you could think of
i wouldn’t say it was "well balanced", but somehow the flavor is not too cloying
there’s also some vanilla and oak, something sour, and some coffee
also some soft cheese (brie?) flavors as it warms up
very warm finish
nice medium body
it is delicious, but should come in like 4 oz servings, definitely hard to finish a whole one on your own... krysztofar (344), belleville, Illinois, USA Jan 24, 2009 12oz. boy has this been a long time coming! i have been waiting to try this since i passed on five years ago and haven’t seen it in my region since. pours with no head, only a thin khaki ring. not as dark as i had expected. the color is a very murky black brown with orange edges. dark fruit is lively on the nose. strong notes of leather, dust, madeira, and bourbon barrel are also noted. the level of alcohol is perceived, but not obvious. body is much less full than i had anticipated. the level of carbonation is higher than anticipated. rich and roasty, with a solid amount of hop bitterness to keep it all in check. like drinking fine and fresh origin coffee, that has a shot of whiskey. the finish has a touch of sweetness, but avoids becoming cloying. alcohol is very well hidden, until you finish half of it... overall; worth the wait. Butters (1622), Virginia, USA Jan 22, 2009 2008 bottle split with brent at woody’s. Dark brown pour with ruby highlights and wispy ring of light brown head. Nose of roasted malts, toffee, chocolate, and just the slightest indication of the abv. Flavors of muted alcohol, roast malt, raisins, smoke, leather, and an earthy dirt quality. Medium chewy body with fair carbonation. Anise and molassis come out more as it warms. This does a remarkable job of masking the abv. I know a lot of people were talking shit about the 2008 release, but this was just fine to me! checkmatei1 (629), Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 21, 2009 Draft @ Capone’s Dec ’08: Poured a dark brown/black color with not much head. The aroma was black licorice, strong alcohol, and coffee. The flavor was smooth, chocolate, coffee, alcohol, creamy, and dark fruits. Overall, this brew was aged for about a year, and the year was great to this beer. I’d love to get a few a put away for a couple years. Rustyham (543), miami, Florida, USA Jan 19, 2009 Is this beer or some magical whiskey formula? You can smell it even when your glass is on the table, wafting majestically through the air tickling every module in your nose- this is the malt version of Dogfish Head’s 120 minute. Fantastic smorgasbord of heavenly roasted sweetness. If it weren’t for the hefty price this would be a weekly staple. I am done with hard liquor, this is my new gateway to being smashed. This beer deserves to be in a flask. Rogueone (506), I F&ckin’ hate those guys from, Ohio, USA Jan 19, 2009 2007 Bottle sampled at the Hopsnobbery Collective stout tasting on 1.16.09. I was afraid to try this after having a rather soy-riffic fresh bottle but I was pleasantly surprised with this beer after a year on it. Dark and oily pour, with no head (scary!) Very present aroma of nail polish remover, and maple syrup. Still got a hint of soy but it’s nothing like the nightmare of a fresh bottle. Sort of an airy finish. In two words: Booze Syrup. JaBier (1126), Capital City, Ohio, USA Jan 19, 2009 2007 Bottle sampled at the Hopsnobbery Collective stout tasting on 1.16.09. Pours black with a medium beige head. Boozy aroma with some malty sweetness and licorice. Coffee flavor with some hop and a finish that is a tad sweeter then bourbon. More like brandy. Very good.
