vtafro (452), , New Jersey, USA Jan 6, 2009 Updated: Apr 7, 2009Re-rate: With a new tasting comes a new rating, along with more appreciation. On tap at hulmeville inn in PA. Although they only allow you one, one is all you’ll need a great beer to sip on, i wouldn’t recommend chugging it. MmmcKay (269), Brentwood, Tennessee, USA Jan 4, 2009 Fantastic beer. Amazing how the alcohol is balanced and doesn’t overwhelm the palate at all. Dark, Dark in color. Very little head. Wonderful flavor but cellaring should bring out more of the beer’s complexities. mmmmm fizzban (27), whitehouse, New Jersey, USA Jan 4, 2009 this beer as is advertised does have more incommon with a port. super sweet and thick. as bold as a beer can be, dark toffie and carmell tones. sixfootsix (13), Franklin, Tennessee, USA Jan 4, 2009 This beer start to end is nothing but good. with very little head, to the caramel at the beginning and the roasty sweetness at the end. Highly recommended but not for a beginner. REDBOSOX (70), Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, USA Jan 2, 2009 I must say that for a beer with an 18% ABV, this one went down VERY smoothly. It was the perfect way to bring in 2009. It had a nice sweetness that I enjoy. This beer was worth the 9 bucks I spent for it. I highly recommend everyone trying it at least once. It pours very dark with a thin head. The toffee, chocolate, and coffee tastes are noticeable, along with the dark fruit notes. The Dogfish Head Brewery really puts out some extreme beers for extreme people like me. Try some of their beers. You will NOT regret it. bconley (351), Fern Park, Florida, USA Jan 2, 2009 On tap at redlight. Pours black as it should be. Smells like roasted malts and a lot sweeter than I’d have guessed. Very warming on the way down. Really liked the coffee notes. Hope to have this one again...also had heaven and hell...Half World wide, Half 120 min. IPA.....watch out for that. Beaver (588), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Dec 31, 2008 12 oz bottle. Pours a brownish black with a fizzy tan head that quickly goes to a thin collar.
The aroma is sweet sugary alcohol with some dark fruits and a little burnt grains.
The flavor is sweet molasses, chocolate malts and cola with a hot bitter alcohol finish. The alcohol is pretty well hidden for 18%, but is still very unbalanced. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and watery with almost no carbonation.
Overall, I didn’t care for this. It’s pretty overrated in every way - it’s a watery treacly alcoholic mess. I do wonder if it would get much better with age on it.
Travlr (700), Washington, Washington DC, USA Dec 27, 2008 Very black, light tan head. Aroma of bitter dark chocolate and dark roasted coffee, but not overwhelming. Balanced flavor with malt, chocolate, coffee and decent bitter finish. Alcohol not apparent until you stand up.
