douglas88 (1557), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA May 30, 2008 Bottle thanks to dchmela. Bright green/yellow cap, 2007 edition. Pours a pure black with a quickly deflating head. The aroma is mostly dark fruits, and old can of oil, and burnt brown sugar. The taste was quite interesting; very sweet brown sugar, coffee, caramel, burnt malt, some black cherry and a a burnt tree limb. Not really that hot at all, but there is a lingering alcohol there. Interesting for sure. I’m fairly divided about this beer, on one hand it’s full of flavor and is easy to drink, especially when considering the ABV. But I’ve had better for sure, overall a good beer I need to try again. Well crafted. restless7 (104), Lenexa, Kansas, USA May 30, 2008 BOTTLE: Green lid, bought in May 08 not sure of age. Dark pour with small thin, quick tan head. Aroma is very strong coffee and chocolate with roastedness, and surprisingly not much alcohol aroma. Flavor is complex and strong, the alcohol definitely comes through but not overpowering at all considering the strength! Palate is soft, smooth and somewhat lingering with a very nice finish. Not the best stout but considering the incredible strength it’s definitely the most well balanced and still smooth. easement (4), USA does not count May 29, 2008 I had this beer at the Savour craft beer festival in Washington, D.C.
I poured dark and was surprisingly well balanced for the punch that it packs.
This could be my new favorite DFH beer. casuistry (3), Goose Creek, South Carolina, USA does not count May 27, 2008 My first stout which happened to keep me away from IPA’s for awhile. Although extremely strong you would never notice. Strong flavors of coffee and cocoa. SchwillyWilly (3), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA does not count May 27, 2008 I am in complete shock...how on Earth did they get this beer sooo smooth for how strong it is. AMAZING! Worth every penny! BossHossBikes (147), Tennessee, USA May 24, 2008 2006 Bottle. Pours like motor oil. Dark, dark burgundy glows around the thin edges up against the light. The aroma is intensely malty. Roasted coffee, subtle hints of cocoa, lots of dark fruit (prune) notes, and a lot of alcohol are in the nose. As you sip, the alcohol just aerates your mouth causing an early warm sensation in the throat. It’s very viscous to the tongue with a light amount of carbonation. As the brew sits on the tongue, the alcohol fumes concentrate. A ridiculous amount of molasses and cocoa is evident along with some sweet and tart dried prune. As the beer slides past the tongue and travels down the throat, the alcohol warms the mouth as coffee becomes quickly evident. The alcohol flavour rapidly escalates. Prune and the dark fruit flavours persist through the finish. Prunes, coffee, cocoa, and alcohol sums up the finish quite nicely. It’s quite delicious, though a little sweet for my tastes. oteyj (716), Canterbury, New Hampshire, USA May 23, 2008 Bottled in 2007. Special beer for my 200th rating. Pours motor oil black with pretty tiny head. Aroma is of coffee, bitter chocolate, raisin, vanilla, and lots of alcohol. Very roasty and robust. At first sip I was all but knocked back by the incredible flavors. So powerful, so robust, and having so much character. Espresso, chocolate, dark fruit, perfectly aged. Alcohol is unnoticable given its suprisingly high ABV. Roasty and beautiful, this beer deserves to stand amongst the best. craftycarl21 (513), South Hero, Vermont, USA May 23, 2008 appearance is motor oil black, smallish head for an imp stout. solid lacing. aroma is incredible, chocolate, dark fruit, and raisin, with definite alcohol presence that makes this beer somewhat resemble a sweet liqueur. flavor is otherworldly- similar to aroma, but with some extra hints of malt and less aggressive alcohol kick. remarkably smooth and tasty finish, absolutely delicious. palate is strong, but not thick and cumbersome like some less fine imperial stouts. extraordinary beer.
